Very funny, guys.
AlisonL: I love New Englanders! It might be because I am one. I guess I'll have to hang around for awhile.

There are so many people moving here from other states (California is high on the list and Florida is next) that the place has changed and is in danger of becoming another Atlanta. Anywhere around Nashville is crazy. Traffic is horrendous. The small town feeling is gone unless you go pretty far out from Nashville. I live close to Franklin, an historic town that has lots of tourists. It's a wealthy county and people are building these HUMONGOUS homes. It dwarfs most of the originial inhabitants who can't afford to buy homes in the area that they grew up in.

I just read that Darrell Waltrip owns a ranch in Franklin, TN. Since he's a multi-millionaire, he probably built a humongous house on his acreage. At least, he's a southerner.
I would be more sympathetic except my FL town was invaded by developers and flippers and have ruined it for me and the others who lived here. If it's a wealthy county, I can't afford it on my teacher's pension.

I was wondering about the same thing
So far I have yet to finish reading all of the responses to this post, however this exact same question has been on my mind for the last year or so. My family and I are moving from Louisiana in a couple years and all we speak of is TN. I hear wonderful things about it and our destination is Murfreesboro, although I fancy the outskirts of a city and prefer the "not to far away country location" which is where I'm trying my hardest to end up. I often wonder what's in TN that makes everyone love it so. I'm truly anxious to see. I get around the country some on my road trips but have yet to make my way their. I wonder what the effects of many folks making their way their would be. I am the sort of person who loves the out doors and scenery, I'm told TN's the place to be for that. I'm starting to paint a picture of what my life for myself and my three dogs will be their. I'm disgusted with the everyday life I have here as it can be very stressful in this small city with many people, and a steadily rising crime rate. I've lived here all my life and it's finaly gotten to be way to much for my folks and I. I worry about the crime and population boom their also, I am anxious to make this move, but at the same time I'm cautious, I just want to better my life by removing some of the anxiety and bleakness. I plan to make my way their this spring to see what things are like, see if I have any job opportunities and hopefully get a good feeling about Murfreesboro, (and the surrounding area). The one question I've had a bit of difficulty finding out is if Murfreesboro is a canine friendly area. Do they have any dog parks? Or is their just so much space and wilderness that we can hike for miles without seeing any other puppies. I'm trying to locate Petsmart's, Vet's offices and the like. My dogs are my "children" so to speak and mean the world to me. I truly hope that this move for us is, for the better and I dont end up worse off than I am. Can you tell I worry a bit? Lol.

I say we keep talking about snakes, spiders, coyotes, bats...have to think about some previous threads...tornadoes, earthquakes, icy curvy mountain roads, traffic, air quality in Knoxville, not enough sunny days...still thinking...people who invite you to church against your will and/or people that are tooooo nice so you suspect ulterior motives, people who socialize with their church meaning you are left out, "stupid" dry counties, corporal punishment in schools, jailing bad parents with absentee kids, schools that don't take your parental "helpful suggestions"...no gun control, smoking all over the place so you might have to take your business elsewhere, watermelon seed spitting contests, square/buck dancing, rampant Yankee baiting/teasing/ignoring even though you're so wonderful/smarter/tolerant than them, predominantly Republican registered East Tennessee, hunting, no Meagers or whatever the name of that store was that started with an M...still thinking...I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE'S A TAX ON FOOD! even though I don't pay state income tax, some places with no broadband, "good old boys" only get hired and they passed up my sterling "I'm a highly educated professional" 20 different jobs resume to hire a guy who has lived here all of his life, not enough high-end retail stores, lower wage jobs, polite men that treat you like a lady and you don't know how to handle that, non diet conscious people who offend your eyesight, people with missing teeth that offend your eyesight, people with southern accents that offend your ears, men who sit in pick up trucks and, you know, sit there, too many country music stations...and HORRORS, poor people that have lived there all the years of their life who might be living in the general vicinity of where you want to build a house.
Have I missed anything?

Gee, that's exactly WHY I'm going there from the NE, and you need to live somewhere else!

I got up this morning and had a leisurely drive into Johnson City from Telford ( 10 miles). It was about 38 degrees, but the sun was shining on the mountains as I drove down the highway. It is nice to be in Northeast Tennessee. I took a different route going home. Getting right up to the mountains and coming into Jonesborough through the backdoor. It really has been a beautiful day.

There's alot more traffic on Tennessee interstates and roads now and some of the drivers are not so friendly. Tennesseans generally drive fast, but I don't remember all of the aggressiveness when I lived here before. I'm not sure if it's because of people moving in or if driving manners are just declining everywhere. Maybe I'm noticing it more the older I get. I thought Florida traffic was crazy, but sometimes it feels like Florida with all of the bad driving habits I see.

Traffic in the Tri-Cities area is very tame though rather slow for a former Floridian. The scenery is so lovely that I really don't mind the slow pace.
