True. I was referring more to traffic in the Nashville area and to a lesser extent, Knoxville.
But once I hit Interstate 81 outside of Knoxville to northeastern TN, it seems alot calmer. Also Interstate 81 into Virginia is stunning.

Knoxville is so sprawled out that it usually takes longer for me to drive through than Nashville.

The main problems with some east Tennessee counties ,Sevier County is nothing but a tourist trap,People come here on vacation and fall in love with the Smokey Mountains, the weather and YES even the people. But trying to live here and fight all the traffic every day can change your mind. We have a lot of people here from a lot of different places. One poster did not seem to like the way it is here, and that is where the problem is.The people here that have lived here all or most of their lives are really good people, although they don't like so many changes. If you want to start a neighborhood fight comparable to the famed Hatfield-n-McCoy ,just say one time thats not how we did it in Mi,or Fla. or wherever. We welcome all.We know why it's easy to fall in love with the area, but don't try to change it into what you left to come here in the first place. We don't like neighbors that try to tell us what we can or can't do with our own land or home, after all some of us have been here on the same land for generations. If you want a HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION or a law that tells you how big or small your deck has to be then you will not like it here.
You said you like Knoxville area,You should think about Gatlinburg,Sevierville area.It is a growing area and you have a choice to live in a rual area {cheaper } and work in a tourist area,I think your husband would have several choices of job opertunitys. Just come down here for a week or a few days and check out the possabilitys.Your teenager would have a choice of several GOOD comunity colleges and even the University of Tennessee close by. I know that will not get them out of the house but trust me it has saved me a lot of money just not having to pay for their living expenses away from home.

Good morning Laura,
In reply to your post regarding people moving to TN FOR the culture, etc., that is exactly what we are doing, here in the delightful community of Muddy Pond. Have found a solid church and hope to be a blessing to all we meet!
Sincerely,
Denise

We just say howdy to folks as we walk by and know the ones who ain't from here when they ignore us rather than speaking back.

Welcome to TN, Denise. And, double welcome to the TN forum. We like to see new "faces" and hear new ideas from folks who have just relocated to the area.
I hope you have some questions answered here and find out about some fun and interesting things to do in TN.
I am sure that you will be a great addition to your community.

You know, there are just as many fine, kind, good-hearted people from Michigan and Ohio as there are in any other state, I believe. Many of the folks that are moving to TN from OH and MI are origianally from someplace else. Some may be from TN.
I know for a fact after having spent a third of my life living in Michigan and still having family and friends there that some of them are living through some pretty desperate times right now. They have no choice, but to cut bait and fish someplace else.
Many folks from that part of the country settle on TN because the main north/south corridor is I-75 and they like what they see as they travel through the state.
When you are desperate for a job and a good safe, friendly place to raise your children, you must decide between what is best for your family and the heartache of leaving behind your extended family, friends and the place you have always called home.
It isn't easy for these folks to make this kind of move and life-altering change. The ones that you think are so unfriendly and unneighborly may still be in culture shock, depression and in a sense of aloneness.
I would hope that every good-hearted person living in TN would try to welcome these newcomers into their neighborhoods, schools and churches and give them half a chance to not feel like invaders, but neighbors.
We should all be educated in the fact that most big city dwellers (like Detroit, Pontiac, Cincinnati, Chicago) are not accustomed to people being outwardly friendly without knowing them. They are taught to be a little suspicious of others in the city because there are unscrupulous and sinister people everywhere. Do not give them reason to think that they have to cling to this fear when living in the south. Instead, let's show them what it feels like to be safe, welcomed and appreciated for themselves - not where they are from.

I live close to Franklin, an historic town that has lots of tourists. It's a wealthy county and people are building these HUMONGOUS homes. It dwarfs most of the originial inhabitants who can't afford to buy homes in the area that they grew up in.

That's the same thing that happened to us here in, Jupiter, Florida. Now all of us who have lived here most of our lives can't afford a home in the town we grew up in. Now, most of us that grew up here are looking at other parts of the country to move to. My wife and I are moving to Greeneville, Tennessee. I have friends that have moved as far away as Alaska.
Right now, North Eastern Tennessee is like Jupiter was thirty or forty years
ago. I hope it does not change too much. A LITTLE growth is alright, but too much is no good at all.

Just to let you know; this is one soon-to-be halfback that has no intention of changing Tennessee whatsoever. My wife and I are moving to Tennessee because we love it there. We don't want any homeowners associations telling us what to do on our own land. I lived where there was a homeowners association for about a year and that was enough for me. My wife has never had one. We want to fit in up there and enjoy what Tennessee has to offer, not change it to meet us.
Northeast Tennessee is a wonderful, beautiful place. The people have been VERY welcoming to us. We can't wait to get up there and talk about it everyday.
I just hope the influx of people does not change our area of Tennessee too much. If so, we will move someplace else.

So tell me, who is coming to East Tennessee because -
You want to hunt and/or fish more often? well, i don't hunt, but am used to the hunters here in wi
You want to be a part of a church community lifestyle? (meaning your religious institution is more than a building where you attend services once in awhile - it is also an avenue to socialize and do good deeds in the community)? absolutely! we have a great church now that we will miss, but finding a new one is something we are looking forward to - it looks like there are a lot of good choices.
You want to celebrate traditional religious holidays like Christmas, for example, or patriotic holidays like Memorial Day or 4th of July beyond having a day off from work or going to sales at the stores? (parades, events)? can't wait!
You want to hear more country, bluegrass, gospel or blues music than you hear now? You want to learn some southern dances? sounds fun.
The idea of eating traditional southern dishes or something you've caught or shot appeals to you? never turned down good food!
You want to spend more time with your ATV, racing or truck? Or, you are looking to buy one/participate in related activies/events? well, i will skip this one, but that is okay
You want to belong to some group after you get to Tennessee that has to do with nature and/or nature related sports (hiking, rafting, birding, etc.)? my hubby will enjoy this more than me, but he'll get me to join with him.
You think a person's property is his to do with as he pleases? yep
You like to swim in lakes and/or swimming holes? hubby does
You like the school rules, the school curriculum, the school activities more than the place you left? ours is fine here, but i am looking forward to more choices than what my son currently has... currently, his high school is 500 kids, few choices... will be over 2000 kids. much broader selection for classes.
You want to marry a southern man or a southern woman raised in Tennessee or have friends who are Tennessee natives? my hubby is a good southern boy from nc. i'll probably just keep him!
You want the town you are looking at, to stay exactly like it is now and not looking at the town for what it could be once more transplants arrive? loved loved loved the town!
