While it is bad now I am seeing Help Wanted signs and homes selling in East TN. I think we are starting the recovery and it will continue for the upcoming years.

Where is it 22 percent? I don't doubt you. I am sure there is an area somewhere that has that rate, but certainly not everywhere. I just don't know what area you are referring to.

I'm with Beretta. The unemployment rate in Tennessee has gone down. And in the Knoxville area, it has gone down from 9.3 to 9.0. It's not great, but some other parts of the country are doing much worse. We are slowly turning around.

Latest numbers, they're for July. August numbers will be out in a couple of weeks. Scott county tops it out at 19.6%. Most of the Plateau counties are still in the 15% neighborhood, mine's right at 16% and even that is propped up by stimulus jobs. Most of those were summer temps so I'm not expecting any improvement for the next couple of months. There was also a statement with this release that indicated much of the reduction in the unemployment rate was due to people giving up and dropping out of the labor force statistics.

Whoops! I forgot to put up MY link!

It's from The United State Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Table 1. Civilian labor force and unemployment by state and metropolitan area

Oh, heck yarddawg, your stats are better! It has Knox County at 8.3! Thanks!

Tri-Cities CSA is at 9.8, while Johnson City MSA is at 9.7 and Washington County is at 9.1 (likely from dropping Erwin/Unicoi out of the statistic). Not quite as good as Knoxville but much better than many places in TN.

That's right.

In fact, while Tennessee's unemployment rate dropped from 10.7% in June to 10.6% in July, there were almost 12,000 fewer people employed in July. (Nationwide there were 155,000 fewer people employed in July from June.) In other words, the unemployment rate may have gone down, but there are still more and more people without jobs.

Knox County, however, gained about 2,000 new jobs between June and July.

Go Knox County!

You know, it's sad to say, but some of the counties with high unemployment rates are just always high and have been for decades.

Remember, the Tri-Cities in general took a pretty big hit with Exide battery going under in Bristol. But I have noticed an increase in new small local businesses, a few restaurants going in and a couple new retail store opening so it might pick up even more over the next few months in all of East TN. Lets hope so!
