The Watauga River is in Elizabethton, TN. The Tailwaters I fish are below The Little Wilbur Dam. If you look up Little Wilbur Dam on google maps, you can get directions. Try this page. It marks the spots that have trout and shows Little Wilbur Google Maps - Trout Maps
This is a nice area. The water is cold even in the Summer, so you need waders. Our friends at dreamaway cabins in Elizabethton have cabins right on the river. I love it. They should be stocking trout by now, too.

Be careful of snakes(eastern rattler common but, unlike cottonmouth water moccasin, not easily provoked).Wearing simple gaiters or any durable wader should suffice in this regard.
Also, keep a cellphone on you,in case you spot suspicious activity(eg the same car making multiple passes by your vehicle, looking for "goodies" or some other opportunity),and be sure to hide any expensive rods, etc in your trunk.Firearms areilligal in most areas, though pepper spray is not.
Finally, women should not fish alone, particularly when menstruating, and especially in GSMNP(smokie mts). CR (Spaz)Burnett

I see where the Watauga River tailwater near Elizabethton might meet my requirements. Some of the concerns I have are acceptance as a "yankee" and surviving humidity in the summer. Any comments or input would be appreciated.
Why not research the locations of Trout Unlimited clubs and then ask about the fishing in the areas that interest you if they don't have enough info on their websites? When I am by Weir Dam in Norris, TN I see fly fishermen all of the time but can't tell you if the fishing is good there.

You can start with:

Fly Fish Tennessee | Trout Unlimited

Fly Fish Tennessee - Trout Unlimited and then click on the orange tab that says Tennessee Trout for a drop down menu of fishing locations. Under each location there is info about the types of trout, the type of fishing (like wade) and a description of the location. Once you have the location you can do separate research on the ones that interest you.
