It's an easy 30 miles on I-40 all the way. Because it's an interstate, it's cleared before any other roads if/when it ever snows. There are very few tornadoes in that part of Tennessee although Crossville has been hit with a couple of small ones in the last few years.
Definitely a wise move on the schools.
Good luck!

People do it everyday.
In the past 10 yrs or so the winters have been mild. There are usually just a few days that I-40 would be hazzardous due to weather conditions. Your worst spots would be the stretch along the plateau exit and going down the mt. between Monterey and Cookeville.
One thing I have learned thru the years of driving up the mt. if you get caught in a snow storm leaving Cookeville, its best to travel up hwy 70.
Ive lived here 30 yrs and have never seen a tornado. There have been a few touch down in surrounding areas over the last few yrs, but nothing like I remember being a kid in Ohio. Tornados are really not an issue in this area.

my husband worked in Crossville and drove from Cookeville to Crossville everyday for five years. Door to door (home to work) 45 minutes tops. HOWEVER, you might want to think about those little things you can't do when you commute like meet your wife for lunch, pick up a sick child, etc. If you haven't commuted this distance before, those are things to think about. If you have no family nearby, who's going to be her backup when those things happen? (speaking from a mom's perspective )

Crossville sees its fare share of Tornados. Don't take my word for it. Cumberland County Emergency Communications Group
Tennessee at one time had more people killed by tornados per capita than any other state. I believe Alabama is #1 the best I can remember looking at the published numbers.
I think the commute would be fine but as someone mentioned above, it is those little things that get ya. I commuted from Crossville to Kingston, 30 miles on the interstate. Doing it was no problem, but when we moved to Kingston, I got a whole new life back I didn't know I had missed.

I didnt see and tornado stats on the link.
From the Tn tornado database I've seen from 1830 to 2008 (for middle tn) there have been 8 deaths thats 0.1 per yr. I dont know where your information is from. I did see a page of top 10 tornados which ranks tn as n0. 10 for killer tornados but then no. 1 for killer tornados as a percentage of all tornados, but it dosent elaborate on how those rankings were derived.

I'm aware of three tornados that have gone through in the last 13 years but there have probably been some smaller ones I don't know about. The Browntown road area still shows evidence of a bad one that ripped up trees several years ago. Theres honestly so few its not worth worrying about.
2mares I was up there again last Saturday for a wedding, that was some wind, 40 mph gusts all day.

Jeez Louise, I knew Memphis/Shelby county was more prone to tornados than the rest of the state, but that link really puts it in persective.
