I don't know seems a lot of people are naming "big" cities that are always thrown out when you think of TN...Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis...Chattanooga.
If you're truly working class as you describe you may want to be close to a city, but a bit out of the city ya know?
I've been all around knoxville and now live in Chattanooga...
Have you heard of Cookeville, TN? It's a college town where TTU is located. About an hour or so from Nashville (east of nashville) and probably an hour to an hour and a half from Knoxville.
Why I think it might fit you're ideal of home. It's a realtively smaller city life than the big 4 places I mentioned earlier, but has a very hippieish and somewhat alternative scene for a lot of college bands/artist some very good indie musicians that I like play and have played in Cookeville. It's got some good bar/music hangouts and you shouldn't have any trouble finding work for you or your husband. Also you're relatively close to two major cities! Plus the land prices and house prices is cheaper than Knoxville/Nashville.
I don't know though Knoxville has a larger music scene overall, but are you looking for well known artist coming to town? Or do you just like good music regardless of the name of the band?
