Savannah, Tennessee
Can someone tell me something about Savannah, Tennessee?
Are there a lot of jobs? How are the schools? Are houses affordable?
Where are the closest shopping centers?
Any information people can give me, is very much appreciated

I've been receiving a lot of e-mails for housing in and around Savannah and was going to ask some of the same questions. As far as housing prices, what I've seen are very good. I do believe it is a more hot, humid area that NE TN which is where we have been looking.
My biggest question regarding Savannah and the surrounding area deals with tornadoes. Is this part of TN prone to tornado activity? I'm wondering if thats the reason there seems to be so many really nice places for sale.
Again, any information anyone can shed will be appreciated.

We just bought a place about 30 minutes from Savannah. From what we have seen so far, the people are extremely friendly and helpful. We did most of our shopping in Florence AL which is about 30 minutes away. The area has many shopping centers and we found everything we needed. The real estate agent told us the unemployment rate is fairly high in that area, so that might account for the numbers of places for sale.
Talking to our new neighbors, tornados don't seem to be frequent in that area. An occasional ice storm. We were there in August and the weather was hot but humidity wasn't too bad. That area was going through a dry spell with no rain for a month.
Sorry I can't tell you a lot about the area, just the little bit we have seen so far. The area is pretty hilly, easy to get lost in, but everyone waves to you, and will get you going in the right direction.

Thanks casey. We've vacationed in TN the past few years but haven't gotten that far south and have seen a lot of homes in that area that seem to be what we are looking for as far as house and land is concerned. Thanks again.

We just bought land about 20 miles from Savannah. People are friendly, area is very quiet.
I like Savannah and Clifton area, but if you are coming from a big city you may have to find your own entertainment. That's what we like about it.
I can't help you on schools (no kids), hospitals (not too ill yet ;>) or jobs (we'll be retired). If you need a good realtor, I have someone to recommend.

Firefighterdon, are you looking for a place in TN or a vacation spot? The Natchez Parkway is a beautiful ride which runs from Nashville to AL. Lots of spots to pull over and spend some time.
If you are looking for property PM me and I can recommend some sites which are excellent for listings. We worked with a guy who was totally honest (sometimes hard to find) about the house, area, etc.
I also don't much about the entertainment (ours was Home Depot or Lowes) since we bought a fixer upper. The one person we did talk to schools about said they were fine.
Irieblue..have you started building yet?

casey, we are looking for a relocation spot basically. We're leaning towards NE TN or middle TN near the KY border mostly at this point since the area is quite similar to where we live in NE PA. I've received a lot of homes via e-mail from realtors in the Savannah and Henderson area, and quite a lot seem to be what we are looking for; however, I don't think I would like the summers in this area. Basically, I'm looking for something with acreage (>10 ac. hopefully) near hunting & fishing areas. I also like NE TN because it is close to Knoxville and believe it or not, I'm a huge fan of Pat Summitt's Tennessee Lady Vols and can't wait to see some home games.
Thanks for the input.

We just got our septic permit, water hooked up (city water runs by - much easier than a well) and chatted with the electric people. Septic system should go in in the next few weeks, and we will be building a garage with facilities in August (time and job constraints).
From there, we will be building ourselves, as time permits. We retire in 6 years. Still can't decide between log home and conventional frame house. We will probably have someone start it, and we'll do the finish work. I can't get enough time off, and if I send my hubby up there alone, he'll never come back! He hates where we live now and absolutely loves TN!

Tornadoes DO happen there. Be prepared to be self entertained, sel sufficient there. If you are used to a large city and any culture, you are in for a big surprise. It is 100 miles to the nearest real airport. If you like country music you will fit in, but be prepared to hear, "you're not from here are you?"
