And sorry, but, I love Walmart. There's a Costco and Direct Buy in Knoxville, so again, I'm happy.
I support the local's, but in my experience in business, if you don't change or adapt, then you go under. Local shoppes provide the ambiance and local goods that Walmart doesn't, and that's fine.
Now, if we can only find out what heavy equipment operators really do make in that area, .....

Not sure what salary you are looking for but on monster.com they show the following for base salary (of course, this is not taking in consideration years of experience etc.)
Knoxville, TN
25% $36,721 Median $42,682 75% $47,762
They did not have an option for Cookeville.

If we're going to try quoting Shakespeare, let's get it right:

"Hamlet", Act III, Sc.2, (line 242)
But back to the topic at hand. What you consider "big city shopping" is certainly not what most people in these parts consider to be big city shopping. Otherwise, using your definition, only Nashville and Memphis would even come close to being big cities since they're the only places with Macy's in Tennessee. And that, of course, is a a rather pompous conclusion.
Those people who look down their noses at places like Knoxville or Chattanooga because we don't have a Nordstrom or Saks Fifth Avenue are exactly the kind of folk who should stay away.

Putting words in my mouth again. Never stated it nor implied it. I have family in Knoxville, and never look down MY nose about ANY area of Tennessee. Tennessee will always be my home no matter where I live.
There is nothing wrong with Walmart and the like, but they are certainly no where near 'big city'. [insults are NOT allowed on this forum [/mod]

Please tell me about Kingsport. How do you like it there? How long have you lived in Kingsport? How is police protection? Is there a hospital in Kingsport? Are you easily able to find goods and services? How is the humidity in the summer compared to other places in Tennessee? What is your average snowfall in winter? Is there an abundance of property (land) available? Your answers to these questions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Okay people...I'll throw out another question in joining this bunch of really great people up yonder in East TN.... Which area can use a fast, fair priced, family owned Towing company?
We're open to suggestion but need to find an area to make a decent living, be able to help people in need and actually find people with good morals and values. We live in the bowels of the south now down here in Florida and aren't liking the cost and the way things are growing down here.

I would suggest an area anywhere in the Tri-Cities or North East TN as far as the towing Co. I hate to say it but the fact is the more people there are in one area, the more chances of car accidents. Now we don't have near the number of car accidents like there are in larger FL cities, but we do have two main highways here and it does happen.
But as for living, there are plenty of out lying areas that seem rural but you can get to main cites in several minutes.
Just my thought.

Hi there....and Thank you for your input! We were looking at Crossville...but I'm not sure I want to stay close to "country clubbers" who stick their noses in the air. We've been to Bristol and love that small town feeling we got there and like Sweetwater also but it seems "too far" from the city to make a living...
We're coming up that way again in a week or two to see Johnson City and hopefully make a decision soon. Florida is getting hotter by the day....LOL.
Now if I can just find the perfect mini-farm.....

hmmm...are you looking to buy a house on that mini farm or buy land and build a farm house on that land?
Either way, you may want to look at a place like Church Hill, Mount Carmel or Surgoinsville. They are all just west of Kingsport and have mini farm type properties.
Hope that helps.
