Thanks! Believe me, I've thought about trying to get on at the Chamber of Commerce in Cookeville. I'm certainly one of Cookeville's biggest cheerleaders. And I'm sorry about your friend in Sewanee. Is she still trying to get on at Tech?
Nope....she's happy at the University of the South now!

Default I understand your enthusiasm

but frankly this is one of the worst times in many decades to leave a secure job (whatever that means today) and uproot yourself and your family to seek employment elsewhere. If one has a high skill job (physician, etc.) this may not apply but short of that I would do due diligence in investigating employment before moving.

I can well understand living in an area one dislikes or perhaps in a job in which one is "trapped" but you might well consider making adjustments in your employment, free time or family arrangements to better cope with your temporary unease. Try to make some small changes in what you have and do before jumping in with both feet in these perilous times.

Your situation might well be unpleasant now but being unemployed with family responsibilities generally trumps most other situations. Given your motivation you will eventually find what you are looking for but I would advise caution. We found what we sought and we landed on both feet in a good place however it took some time.

In any event, best wishes for your future.

Default Thanks to you all...

Thanks so much for all of your replies... you have given both myself and my husband alot to think about. We have decided that we will have to have jobs lined up before packing up and moving our family.
The good thing we have going for us is we don't have alot of debt. We rent our house, only have one small few hundred dollar credit card through the local credit union, own both of our vehicles, etc. Down here our bills (utilities plus 'fun' things like Netflix and Gamefly) come to less than $450 a month. Add on gas and groceries... another $1000 or so, and we don't need a large income to make it. I figure $1000 or so for rent, about the same as we pay here, and that's not to much of a stretch... even if we don't get jobs as high paying as we have now.
Anyway, like I said it's alot to think about. We will definetely have a job lined up for at the least one of us before moving, even with the 3-5 month buffer we're going to have.
Thanks again for your help!

I think you might be able to get by with less for rent--I can't remember if you said how many kids/bedrooms/etc but if you go conservative for your first lease, you might be able to get by with $600-800 for a nice place (less if you only need 2 bedrooms/aren't terribly picky). If you guys start socking away as much as possible, you might have an even larger buffer.

We have 4 kids... 3 girls and a boy. We would need at least a 4 bedroom, we have been in a three bedroom before when the youngest was a baby and she was in the room with her brother, but I really don't want to do that again. I wouldn't want to live in an apt again, either; I would prefer to rent a house like we are doing now.

There seem to be quite a few 4 BR/2 BA houses for rent (many near TTU) for $600-$800 per month.

Thanks! My husband and I have decided to take a trip up after the kids get out of school in a few months so we will be able to look around in person. I can't wait!
