I live in Marion County and LOVE it here. We actually moved here from California two years ago, and have never looked back. We have the property and quiet towns with the Christmas parades, football games, etc. But close enough to Chattanooga (25 miles) that you can have your nightlife, etc. Marion County has the Cornbread Festival in the end of April and the Tennessee River Chile Fiesta on Memorial Day Weekend. The Spring & Summers are Beautiful and the Fall Colors are Wonderful. We have Nickajack Lake to play on, and a lot of places to hike....Just thought I would throw in a point of view from someone who left the big city (Los Angeles)

Again ~ I must post the town of Woodbury in Cannon County. For all people seem to want in a small town. Close to shopping, close to jobs, close to college, close to hospital. If you live in Woodbury or rural Cannon County, you can be in Murfreesboro, for work, college, hospital in just minutes. Then back home to enjoy the Cannon County hillsides with your farmland, horses, dogs and other animals and the rural way of life. I do not live in Woodbury or know anyone who does. I just report what was asked for. An ideal small town close to everything you need and Woodbury fits the bill.

Little town in Tennessee you might like
Hi, I am a native from hohenwald, Tennessee, and I think you would like it. It is most definitely a SMALL town and it is not without its problems, but it has lots of history. Hohenwald is in Lewis County named for the mysterious death of the explorer Merriwether Lewis that occurred in the county. Also many of the buildings in the downtown area are nearly 90 years old, and history is strown all throughout the county in other places as well. The crime rate and cost of living are both very low. The cost of land here is very cheap as well, about $7000 for an acre in the county, and there are countless creeks, streams, and ponds in the area. Also about 45 minutes away is Columbia which lies in Maury County and it has a very high population, offering many of the things you might like to do. Nashville is also about 1 hour and a half away. The Hohenwald population is about 5000, but the Lewis County population is about 13000. I will warn you though, that this is most certainly a backwoods hick town (Walmart is the place to be. No kidding). This town is not for everyone, but you might like it.

Amberjo,
Somehow I missed this until just now. I am sorry I haven't responded sooner. I grew up in Kingsport, went to undergraduate in Johnson City, have a cabin on Watauga Lake (up above Elizabethton), have lived in West Knoxville (Farragut) and currently reside in Maryville city. I am also a part time Jonesborough city resident as I maintain a residence there since I do a lot of work in Johnson City.
Let me know if I can help further.

So i guess a town with a hospital near by and an university near by as well.
I am moving with my 4 year old daughter and my 2 sisters, 15 and 20. They are urging me to find a place that is at least near a town with attractions and things to do for a social life. Me on the other hand i want a place where i can ride 4 wheelers on my property, swim in a lake, have a boat. I love runnning, rock climbing, fishing, camping, hiking. I still need a place where i can do all those things, i am a total outdoors person, one of the reasons i hate Chicago is you have to drive so far to do most of these things.
Another thing i should mention is that i am not a fan of gun laws. I need to be in a town that does not have strick gun laws. I know up here at least it is very liberal and harsh on gun laws, but there are a few counties that have varied laws.
Thanks!

Kingsport (just north of Johnson City) is adding at least one new fire station for newly annexed areas. According to the Kingsport Fire Department website they are currently accepting applications. The qualifications and application process can be found at this link: Kingsport Fire Department
Be advised that only the larger cities such as Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol in this area have paid departments. The areas outside city limits and some smaller towns are covered by volunteer departments that may receive some taxpayer support for capital equipment but no labor funding. I was a member of such a volunteer department for several years and during that time many of our younger members found employment with the city departments as positions opened.
I have lived between Johnson City and Kingsport for 30+ years and hope to remain here during retirement. There are two TVA lakes between these two cities with ample recreational potential. I am about half a mile from Patrick Henry Lake myself. The cities have laws that prohibit discharging firearms within the city limits but I know of no such county restrictions.
There is East Tennessee State University in Johnson City and Northeast State Technical Community College (was two year) between Kingsport and Johnson City. There are also several "private" colleges in this area.
Good luck on your career and home search!

Look at Fayetteville. This small town is just north of the Tennessee/Alabama state line. It is less than 2 hours from Nashville and 30-45 minutes from Huntsville, Alabama. While Fayetteville will provide most of what you seem to be looking for in daily living, Huntsville could provide your job and easily travel for entertainment and shopping.

Take a look at South Pittsburg, TN. Close to Chattanooga, TN (30minutes).
Cornbread Festival this weekend.
