Putnam County (Cookeville) is 9.4%. The city of Cookeville is 13%. Morristown is 15.9%, Maryville is 17.3%. That's insane.

Non-manufacturing jobs in Cookeville:

Tennessee Tech University ... 2400
Cookeville Regional Medical Center ... 1600
Putnam County Board of Education ... 1200
Averitt Transportation ... 520
State of Tennessee ... 440
Wal-Mart (2 SuperCenters and 1 Sam's Club) ... 410
City of Cookeville ... 380
SunTrust Bank ... 350
First National Bank ... 350
First Tennessee Bank ... 350
Jackson Bank and Trust ... 350
Putnam County Government ... 312

There's not much manufacturing anymore in Cookeville. I believe the largest is Cummins Filtration which employs around 900. Oreck (the vacuum cleaners) employs 500'ish, I think, and there are a smattering of other plants which employ a few hundred each.

Hold up. Knoxville is 7.9 percent and Knox County is 7.2.

It is the lowest major metropolitan jobless rate.

And Nashville is 8.5 percent.

11.4% is for the city of Knoxville, 7.9% is for the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area which includes Anderson county, Blount county, Knox county, Loudon county and Union county. Same thing for the Nashville numbers, the Nashville-Murfreesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area contains 13 counties. And that one is 8.4%. 8.5% is for the Combined Statistical Area of Nashville-Murfreesboro-Columbia which combines the Nashville-Murfreesboro Metropolitan Statistical area with the Columbia Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is all of Maury county so it's a 14 county average.

Confused yet? Sometimes I think that's the point.

Any way you slice the statistics right now still adds up to a whole lot of suck.

Don't know about Tennessee, but nationally I think we'll be close to the Jimmy Carter numbers before year's end.
