It's just that most people aren't looking for west TN (minus Memphis). If you're retired, or independently wealthy, or want to live as a subsistence farmer, and are looking to be quite isolated, culturally, then West TN is great.
If you're young, with a family, looking to have somewhat of a plugged in lifestyle and a comfortable salary with some job security, then that's going to be really tough in west TN (and southern middle TN, and a lot of east TN...).

I don't really have anything against west TN, per se. I just don't find the area attractive, that's all. It's just a personal taste issue for me. It's too flat, and I simply was never impressed by what I saw of Memphis. East TN has the mountains and it's just more interesting to me.

I love Tennessee. LOVE IT. It's true that jobs can be scarce--I think your best bet would be the Knoxville area or maybe outside of Nashville (but I think you will find cheaper decent housing in the Knoxville area). What kind of work do you do?

I just got back from a house hunting trip to Jackson, I'm coming from the Hudson Valley in NY and found Jackson to be a really up and coming city. True there were some areas that seem to be not as well to do as others, but I think you will find that in any city. Good Luck.

Not fair Capt. Dan... not all of us are liberals. Some of us are moving to get AWAY from liberals! Is there anything else you don't like about us that we should be aware of...?

Get used to us Yankees. I think you are going to be seeing a lot more of us in the near future. I see houses that have been sitting vacant for months. Why wouldn't a few more contributing taxpayers be welcome ... Are we really not going to be fully accepted in west TN just because we weren't born there? I hope some of you are just kidding

Didnt you hear, the housing market sucks right now. Actually alot of folks are moving to TN mainly due to the low taxes and the taxes are being paid vacant or not. So that really dosent offset the increase in land prices or "liberal yankees" complaining about the conservative south and trying to change things. Just sayin. And I am half "damn yankee".
