What state were you in?

New York schools are 16th, according to the last available rating. Tennessee is 30th.

What does this mean? Well, if you are paying a lot of taxes then 16th isn't that great. Not a lot of bang for the buck is there?

But it really does depend on where you live in a state, too. MBMouse is stating that her kids school is just as good as the one she is comparing it to in Connecticut.

I like the Knoxville schools. I don't think they are as good as Massachusetts schools, where I am originally from, but they seem light years away from Fort Myers, Florida schools, where we moved from four years ago.

It's all relative. Knoxville schools may be fabulous compared with some small farm towns in Tennessee or New York.

I do want to interject something here. Yes, our cost of living is sometimes lower than a lot of other places in the country and yes, property taxes are usually lower than most. However, if you are planing a move here ONLY because of cost of living a tax rates, please beware. There have been a lot of folks on CD over the years that were gun-ho about moving here due to $$ and it wasn't long before there was a lot of complaining about how "behind the times", or " unprogressive" or lots of other complaints. Most of TN, especially out side of the few larger cities, can be VERY different than what someone is used to. It is very important to make a trip, several, really look around a new home town you maybe focused on, talk to people, make sure you will like it. If someone gave me a free house, stacks of cash and told me I had no bills, I still wouldn't move to the desert for it, kwim?
Not saying TN is bad or scary, heck I LOVE it here, ask anyone LOL, but there have been people who only see the cost of living and then have been very upset. Just trying to help.

It's been so long since we had the rush of "I'm moving to Tennessee because it's so much cheaper" crew that I forgot all about that. I don't know how I could. We have a lot of "people drive too slow, no one told me that the pay would be so low, the job recruiters wouldn't beat down my doors, my neighbor has a gun, the people talk funny, there's a trailer at the entrance to my subdivision and I thought those people would have moved by now" folks around these parts.

Oh ladies, do not get me started. If you try to warn them you are not being hospitable; if they don't listen and come here and are miserable you are to blame for not warning people.

Rule 1: Research, research and more research and keep an open mind and do not put on those rose colored glasses. Ever.
Rule 2: Visit, for an extended time if possible.
Rule 3: Visit again and don't be a tourist; assimilate into a real life here as much as possible.
Rule 4: Do NOT, repeat do NOT come here without secured employment and/or at least 6 months of living expenses. This is at a minimum.
Rule 5: You were excited about no state income tax; please don't whine about sales tax. Same goes for anything else. No whining.

I could go on forever but these are the basics. Thank you. Amen. Good night. And God Bless Tennessee.

Well, our sales tax in CA is now almost as high as 9 percent. Plus, we have way higher taxes for everything else. That and our schools are horrible.

I didn't say I was moving tomorrow. I said I will be visiting TN on vacation to check out some areas that I am interested in possibly relocating to.

I do plan on living near a large city. I'm not a country girl. Suburbs yes.

Where I grew up wasn't with the times even though it's in the northeast.

And I don't plan on living somewhere only because of low taxes. that's just silly.

I've seen numerous people never visit a state - particularly southern states - and just up and move without a job. That's just DUMB! Even if we moved due to a job transfer, I'd still visit. We've told my husband's company twice before that we wouldn't move to where they wanted to relocate us. Who can afford Boston? Not us! And our other option was Naperville, Illinois. Another place not on my budget and we won't even talk about the weather!

I see someone on the NC forum move and hate it almost once a week. The state is to blame for all their problems! Meanwhile, they never visited. They didn't find jobs before they moved. And they have no savings. I wouldn't even move to a different town where I live without having savings!

People are weird. LOL
