Default TN Sales Tax & other TN info

How much is Sales Tax in TN? I've read so many different numbers! I am wondering if Nashville and some of the larger cities have a higher rate and that's why I am seeing different numbers.

This chart should help you. The Tennessee.gov website has some great info. http://tennessee.gov/revenue/pubs/taxlist.pdf

Thanks! Do you know what the state portion of Sales Tax is? This shows the individual cities and really does explain why I hear so many different numbers.

TN sales tax is 9.25%. Groceries and unprepared food is 5.5% except in Davidson County it is 7.75%. Hope this helps.

The state sales tax is 7%, 5.5% on food. Individual counties and cities are allowed to add their own sales tax, not to exceed 9.75% (8.25% for food).

Sales and Use Tax

That's right. The state portion is 7%, 5.5% on food. Davidson County adds another 2.25% which it gets to keep.

The original poster couldn't careless the breakdown he/she just wanted to know what is the sales tax in TN. Keep it simple, TN sales tax = 9.25% and for groceries (unprepared food) is 5.5% except in Davidson county which is 7.75%.

It varies from city to city and from county to county. The OP asked about "Nashville and some of the larger cities" and not just for Davidson County. To find the sales tax rate for a particular city or county, you take the 7% state portion (5.5% on groceries) and then add the appropriate local portion which SMG provided in her response above.

So it's 9.25% in Davidson County but in some places across the state it's 9.5% and in others it's 9.75%.

And how's this for confusing: Johnson City has three different sales tax rates because it's in three different counties:
Sullivan County: 9.25%
Washington County: 9.5%
Carter County: 9.75%

Well, in case you failed to notice, sales tax in TN varies county by county. Soooo, the answer isn't, "That simple." Sales tax here is definitely NOT 9.25 and groceries about 4 hours west of Davidson County sure aren't 5.5%.

The poster asked about all of TN, not "Davidson County."
