Soulful beat me to it, but yes, there is a hospital in Jamestown.
I don't live in TN, just work for a major health insurer, and take phone calls from hospitals and facilities all over the US. Everytime I get a call from a Tennessee hospital, I let them know how much I love the state, and one day (ONE OF THESE DAYS!) will move there.

Jamestown was on my list, too of possibles.

Keep us updated on your search and move, and how you like the area when you move, Betsy!

blessings, Shen

Thank you all for your advice /suggestions. We will remember to walk with the DEET for the kids. As for the "camping out" part, we won't be actually in the woods, woods! (LOL) The kids called it "camping out" because of the area we are visiting. We are renting a cabin in the great outback, still I would'nt want to run into any snakes and bears. I have never been to TN before, ever. I am truly looking forwrd to seeing this great state of yours, though.

I truly hope I like it and can find the home of my dreams. I spoke to a lady today about a property and ask her was the area a diverse one, to which she said, it's "getting there". LOL. We'll see won't we. (smiling).....

Talking Top Ten List

Top ten reasons I like Jamestown and Fentress County:

Nicest people on the planet
Big South Fork
Allardt pumpkin festival
Rugby
Sergeant York historic site
Not all that far from Crossville
World's Longest Yard Sale (it started here)
Attractive land prices
Good clean air at 2,000 feet
Pickett State Park.

No, the Chamber of Commerce did not pay me to say this.

I'm for Jamestown well pall mall and live there for 18 years. and it is a very beautiful place all the mountains, caves, waterfall, and many other sites. the people are very nice and cool. But everywhere you go there is going to be rude and mean people. But i think that you wouyld love it there. And the hospital there has really good people too, my mother has worked there for twenty plus years in ER.

I've always liked the Jamestown area and the Big South Fork...I'd move there in a heartbeat if everything else came together. They have the neatest little winery, lots of horse "ranches", rivers, hills, and just lots of Mother Nature.

I hope the OP finds her dream place!

The children are so anxious to "camp out" in the woods, LOL! Which leads me to the next question: Snakes....how bad are they? Are there a lot of them? Are they poisonous? And bears...are there any over there? Somebody, anybody!!
Wild boars are the most dangerous animal you could run into in this region, though bears, panthers, and cougars are scarce, they can be somewhat dangerous as well. Assuming your kids aren't camping in no man's land, there will be no trouble.

If you smell something what many people describe as rotten cucumbers, be looking around. I believe it's actually their urine, but it is a copperhead, or a copperhead's home close by. Rattlesnakes generally give you a clear audible warning when you're too close to them, though a jar fly can be mistaken for a rattler from time to time. If you don't smell it or hear it, but it clearly has a viper head, stay away from it. It might be a cotton mouth, and they tend to be the most aggressive, though they are more rare than the rattlers and copperheads. That said, copperheads don't always have that sent on them, and they are the most common.

If you're walking around in the mountains, it's best to use a stick to thrash the bushes as you're walking along. Most animals would like to avoid confrontation altogether, and this warns them that there may be something dangerous walking their way, and it gives them time to escape. In the right time of year, you won't be able to see a copperhead very easily. You can stare at one for several minutes in the foliage before it appears to you like a magic eye 3d picture, so their escape would be the best scenario.

All that said, animal attacks in this area are very rare, and though you should use precautions, you shouldn't be too worried. All the above is just a lifetime of experience working in the mountains talking. People that spend that much time in the mountains might experience those things, but it wouldn't be likely for someone who is living and working in a community. Worrying about it would be like worrying about getting a disease from a mosquito. It wouldn't keep you from going outside, and it shouldn't keep you from enjoying the mountains.

I've visited Jamestown from time to time. I've not seen minorities outside Hispanics there. Still yet, I wouldn't think the people there racist.

Thank you for that information. Will definitely take all precautions necessary. Just trying to get out of the rat race, you know what I mean?

Id like to think I'm harmless, until I feel the need to defend the life of my family, can you relate?

As for being the only AA in any one area......I rather be around anyone who loves and respect each other, regardless of nationality, than be around a bunch of "the opposite".

I guess I'll see when we get there, won't we?

Yes, it is, but I am having "a time" already, trying to get the realtors there, to send me listings of properties that I would like to go and see. I spoke with a lady there that asked me, "Your accent, where is it from? You sound English". to which I replied, "No not quite, the island where I was was born is in the Caribbean, once owned by Denmark, then to Spain, now currently known as The Virgin Islands. I am African American."

She then said, "You know Jamestown is a not a very diverse area, () to which she quickly added, "But we are getting there". I have been waiting to no avail, for her to send me additional listings, .......still waiting.

So I said, okay, she is not the only realtor in the area, later for herrrr! So I contacted another realtor, give and told her exactly what I'm looking for, she said she would send me several listings, waiting for her too. Turns out that she works out the same office of the other lady.

I'm beginning to get a little frustrated to say the least. We were so looking forward to be leaving here pretty soon! Makes me want to re-think my whole decision about moving to that particular area. The whole purpose of moving there was to live a quiet, laid back, "out of the rat race" kind of life, yet remaining close to our friends.

I have'nt even told them why I'm still here, my friends are not African -Americans and I don't think that they would understand fully because they themselves have never been prejudice and never seen color.

I can't believe people still act like this in 2009! Really? I'm sadden and disappointed to say the least, and the kids.......well they were so ready for the road trip.

I know the whole of TN is not this way, but I can't even get listings that I can go and see, so what's the point of going? How do you get around this? The realtors apparently all work out of the same office and none of them are sending any listings.

I'm typing and tears are flooding down my face, because I'm hurt. I've saved so long to be able to buy a nice home for my children. I just wanted to raise my children with the least amount of influence, so that they can become, respectful, hardworking, productive citizens. That's all. Sorry.
