Jamestown Tennessee on my mind!!
Hi to everyone. I am an African-American female looking to relocate to East TN in the near future. Do anyone know of, or live in or around Jamestown, TN? Would I as an African-American be welcome in that area? We are considering buying property and build in or around the Cumberland Plateau. We are looking for a very quiet, away from the "noise" kind of place to raise our children and just enjoy nature and life in general.
Also, we now reside in Fl and it gets pretty hectic year in and year out "preparing" for hurricanes, year after year after year! What kind of weather if I may, be typical for that part of TN? Someone said to me: tornadoes quickly develop in that region. Is that correct info?
We would really like to build high into the mountains, but also close enough to town to get the children back and forth to school. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

It's true that there aren't many African Americans in Jamestown.
You might want to consider Livingston which is just west of Jamestown. There aren't many African Americans in Livingston, either, but Livingston's mayor is black and is immensely popular.
There are very few tornadoes in that part of Tennessee, although strong thunderstorms aren't unheard of. Since 1950 there have been 12 small tornadoes in Fentress County (Jamestown) and 10 in Overton County (Livingston). The last big tornado to hit that area was in 1974.
Winters are generally mild but with the occasional hard cold snap. Summers are warm and humid although nothing like what you have in Florida.
Just out of curiosity, what made you pick Jamestown?

I'm sure you already know this, but be sure and visit these towns before you move.

Hi Betsy,
I havent tooled around Jamestown for awhile, but I have never seen an AA in Jamestown. It is a very small rural place way out there. Although folks are generally nice and I wouldnt say you wouldnt be accepted but many of the people there are lets say not so progressive or thats the way it was when I use to run around there.
I am also curious why you picked Jamestown.

We have wonderful friends here in Fl that bought some mountain view lots (about 7 acres for 29, 900) and we all have decided that we would like to stay within several miles of each other. They are not African -American, they are a beautiful White American family that do not and have never seen "color". We look out for each other and would like to remain this way until God says otherwise. You understand?
Yes, we are planning to take a trip this summer and visit the area to get a "feel for the place. We will be renting a cabin "outback" for the length of our stay and visit the nearby towns and churches. I'm aware that the economy is in a slump right now and that alone with other factors may cause people to be "not so welcoming" of implants from elsewhere, let alone African-American, but my heart's set on TN and I've been to Georgia and NC last year and that's just not for me.
I'm a nurse and teacher by the way of profession, and he is a trucker. He has driven to TN several times and fell in love with the place. We are harmless, productive American citizens, just trying to get out of the rat race and live life and raise our child to become the same; God-fearing, productive, caring people. That's all.

I hope you didnt take my question the wrong way. I didnt mean anything negative, its just that not too many people really choose to relocate to Jamestown mostly because it is very rural and there just isnt much there. Jobs or entertainment.
Years ago I dated a guy from there, I also occasionally worked in our office in Jamestown and I ride at east fork stables tho not in a few yrs. I wouldnt move there unless I was very wealthy. I hope the area suits you it is very beautiful. If you have time drive out to rugby. It is a quaint old german settlement. Good luck with your move.

Oh no! I did not take your question the wrong way, nothing taken negative at all. I'm the one with the "inquiring mind", remember? Peace, quiet, nature that's what we are looking for.........
As for a job, I'm told there are several hospitals nearby and I also work as a Hospice nurse and would concentrate my efforts in the area. We love fishing and boating, as we are just an hour away from Key West, Fl; we go there quite a bit. We do not party, or even do the night scenes. We attend church, and have lots of fun at home with our children.
Wealthy? Would be able to live comfortable for a "minute" and I do mean a "minute", until reality kicks in.

I know I'll probably get called out for this being off topic but you sound like a most interesting person, Betsey. I think you'd be welcome anywhere.

I think the closest hospital is in Crossville, then Livingston and Cookeville with Cookeville being the largest. Those are the ones Im familiar with.
You have Dale Hollow and Lake Cumberland close by. There are also lots of parks for hiking and camping. If you are into horses, Jamestown has become quite a horse community. And you will be right in the bible belt so Jamestown area sound like a good place for you if you can find work. How soon do you hope to be moving? Let us know how your visit goes.

Why thank you! I am a nurse like I've stated in the above. I don't think you can become a nurse, so to speak. I think you have to have an actual love in your heart to care about people and want to see them live as healthy as possible. I think because of my love for people in general, I do tend to get along with anyone.
I'm not worried about me, myself facing any racism, I can handle it pretty fairly, but my children have not been exposed to that "sad" (for lack of better word) part of life and I know that I cannot shield them entirely from it, but I would really hate to build a home, right in the middle of it, so to speak. Renting a home is one thing, but investing in land and building a home is another. And once my foundation is laid, there's NO devil in hell, and I mean NO devil in hell will cause me to move the easily!! You understand?
There's enough going on with the world in it's present state, I certainly did'nt vote for this kind of change.
