Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but has there really been 6 pages and not one mention of BBQ? Typical Memphis style is pulled pork with cole slaw and not an overwhelming amount of BBQ sauce.

I've always heard that the difference in Sweetened Ice Tea and Sweet Tea is when and how you put in your sugar.

Beyond that, I'm lost.

I read that too. The Sweet Tea I had didn't taste like it was sweetened with suger but maybe it was. I read that you add the sugar to the water before heating and making the tea and that it is weaker than regular ice tea. In any case it's good. Two things I did not get to try when I was down there were Hush Puppies and real southen fried chicken. I couldn't find Hush Puppies or fried chicken anywhere. Are these more regional Tennessee foods or was I just not finding them. We were in Souther Middle Tennessee, Lawerence, Wayne counties and around the surrounding counties.

That last sentence just made me HUNGRY.

I have friends who just moved here from Manhattan (and LOVE it here), they're eager to become BBQ experts. I told them to go to Memphis for the best BBQ in the world.

I recently went to Buddy's barbecue because I think someone said it was really good, but I really hated it. Too much tomato for me. I make a decent sauce and decent rub.

For some of the best Barbecue in east TN, try Stan's Barbecue in Greeneville (across the highway from Ryan's)

For the poster who queried about hush puppies, about the only place that I know of where you can 100% find them is Captain D's, which is a chain. Beyond that, Huck Finn's Catfish in Pigeon Forge has them.

Fried chicken.. hmm.. mostly you have to find somebody's house to get yourself invited to, or stop by KFC.

Ever so often one of the barbeque places in Memphis opens a restaurant in Nashville. They usually don't last very long. Their style of barbeque isn't as popular here. Plus people get tired of telling them to leave off the cole slaw. ;-)

Thanks! I like to try to find local resturants to try real local foods. As far as getting invited to the neighbors as I'm not even there yet that might take awhile. KFC!!!! You are kidding right??????

I had a friend in from Pittsburgh last week. It was his first visit to Nashville. I took him to Swett's in the Farmers Market one day (and then a walk around the Bicentennial Mall). Swett's is a black-owned restaurant that has been in business since 1954.

Tell us when you come, northcountry, and we'll give you some recommendations. Be sure to try a cheeseburger and a shake at Rotier's near Centennial Park.
