Default Tennessee foods

Ok, I was having a discussion with my mom and she was asking me what foods is TN known for. Well, obviously barbecue is one, but what else?

I just came back from there and I always try to taste the local flavor when I'm traveling. Kind of a foodie! While I was there I ate country ham, bisquits and REAL sausage (sawmill?) gravy, grits with my eggs, chicken fried steak, fried catfish and drank sweet tea. Bad for the diet but all absoutely delicious. I'm not sure but I think I also tasted black eyed peas. They weren't marked so I'm not sure. I don't know what they look like.

what's up with the redeye gravy...some of the hotels we stayed in served that for breakfast with biscuits. I read that it has coffee in it so I stayed away from it since I'm not a coffee drinker.

Someone's momma might makes redeye gravy with coffee . . . mine never did.

Blackeyed peas have a small, dark "dot" on one side, hence the name.

Biscuits and sausage gravy (gained a few pounds after moving here and finding this yummy stuff!)
I guess TN is most known for the "meat and 3" which personally I don't care for except at a certain few places. I guess you could call me a food snob LOL!

Many "country dinner" and home town restaurants have menus that you chose one meat( fried chicken, baked chicken, fried steak, Salisbury steak, pork chops etc.) and 3 vegetables. But mind you the "vegetables" you usually have the choice of maybe two green which is usually green beans or greens (spinach, collard, or mustard greens) and the others are usually mac and cheese, corn, potatoes, cooked apples, soup beans and other such that I personally don't consider "veggies" I see them more as starches. Not saying they are bad, I just prefer fresh veggies like steamed broccoli, squashes, asparagus, cauliflower and such. See...I am a food snob LOL!!!

Not to forget chess pie, fried green tomatoes, collard greens, hush puppies, and hog jowls.
