Default Tennessee Property Taxes

Hello Everyone. My husband and I are contemplating a move from Alabama to Sevier County. Here in Alabama we have extremely low property taxes. I have heard that Tennessee has high property taxes to compensate for the fact that there is no income tax. Is that so, and could someone tell me what the property tax rate is in Tennessee, most specifically Sevier County?

Thanks!

suzie Q,
Rate Per $100 Value

Sevier County $1.66
Sevierville $ .38
Pigeon Forge $ .1242
Gatlinburg $ .1777

This information is from the county website, (living, communitites, property taxes) here is the link. it lists county tax as well as individual cities within the county and the ratio of assessment. You will also find info on sales taxes, etc.

I live in E. TN and it's not the property tax that's high, it's the sales tax.

Property tax is quite reasonable, while sales tax is 9.5% or close, depending on the community. This includes food, too.

Are you saying there is sales tax on groceries in TN?

Can you guesstimate what the property taxes would be on a home purchased this year for $200,000 in Carter County? I can't get any of the websites with that info to work for me.

Thanks.

This web site has been posted a dozen times on here:
http://www.comptroller1.state.tn.us/PAnew/LR.asp?W=06 (broken link)
It lists every property tax rate for every town and every county in Tennessee.

In rural Carter County, the property tax rate is $2.10, in Elizabethton it's $3.88, in the sliver of Johnson City that's in Carter County it's $3.90, in Watauga it's $2.41.

Is there really no income tax in TN? If so, this is officially the best state ever!
