"Palmetto bugs".......I think that is just a pleasant way to say "Huge flying **** roach"!
Those things are awful and I don't miss them or all the mosquito's that would chew on me the minute I walked out of my Fl door and anywhere I went, there they were! I do not mind the insect population in TN. Ok, the big banana spiders do look creepy, but I leave them alone and they leave me alone, happy co-existence going on here.

There are banana spiders in East Tennesse????? How about black flies? I didn't see any insects while we were down there except for one big bumble bee and a bunch of hornets that had taken up residence in an empty house we were looking at. Black flies pretty much ruin spring up here (not that we're having one yet!!! )

We know someone who works for the TN Forestry Service during the winter (down time for farmers and a busy time for the Forestry Service). We love Middle TN, but we have always said that if we moved to the country, we'd research certain things like how quickly fire fighters (usually volunteer in rural areas) can get to us if there was a need and if the area had common problems in the winter with ice on power lines (power outages), etc. Just a heads up, so you don't move somewhere with blinders on. Rural Middle TN has specific winter challenges that need to be researched if you want an accurate picture before your move. That said, our friends in rural Mid. TN love it; they are just prepared for inclimate weather and emergencies. When you move, locals and esp. old timers could be a huge resource for you with lots of area tips.

We were talking about bugs in Florida that we don't miss. Tennessee does not have banana spiders. Thank goodness!

I don't recall seeing many black flies around here. But watch out for those hornets, they can be clever little devils since they burrow into the ground so that you don't even know they're there until you step on their hole while mowing the lawn and then get stung.

this is really sad but i must admit that i am TERRIFIED of bugs and have called my husband home from work to kill palmetto bugs that have gotten into our house (we live next to a canal). So I must ask - what the heck is a banana spider and how big is it? We are moving the first week of May and I must be prepared. I can handle anything that you would see in a garden, aphids, ladybugs, etc. but it's when they come inside that I have really big issues. My husband once asked what I would do if my baby found a palmetto bug and tried to eat it. I told him I would let her. Then when he asked me if one was standing between me and the baby as she almost fell off a cliff, I had to think about it for awhile. Don't all of your bugs die in the winter? How bad is it in the summer? Do you need a monthly exterminator like you do here in FL?

Well thank goodness you cleared that up. If there's one thing I'm used to where I live it's insects. I definetly won't miss black flies. They make it impossible to be outside in the spring without armour! We have a favorite T-shirt here that says "Black flies don't bite, they suck". I know what you mean about the hornets, we have those too! Ours are relatively indestructible. We don't try to swat them cause that only makes them mad
