I am currently living in Orlando, FL and I am seriously thinking about quitting my job and moving to Tennessee. I've never been there but anything has to be better than where I'm at now. I've been reading a lot of the threads and it seems like people either love it or hate it. I'm hoping for some help figuring out where the best place to move would be. I currently work for the state in a law-enforcement capacity and I'm looking for a career change as well. My thoughts right now are either Memphis or Chattanooga. What would be best in terms of job market and housing market? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The cost of living difference is huge. I live in NE Tenn- there are hospital and university jobs. Have heard some great things about Memphis, which is more of a city. If you work for the state you should have no problem. With the collapsing infrastructure and insurance problems in Florida- you will be happy here.

As a native Floridian who bemoans what's happened to my beloved Florida, I can certainly understand why you'd want to move to Tennessee. After my parents decided enough was enough and moved the family to Tennessee in the 1970s, they have repeatedly said it was the best thing in the world they could've done for us. I am grateful to them for giving us kids the chance to grow up in this beautiful part of the country.

I lived in Memphis for 5 years and absolutely LOVED it. But there's a lot of crime there and definitely a lot of needs for someone in law enforcement. You shouldn't have any problems at all getting a job there.

I think Chattanooga is also a choice place, an absolutely beautiful city that probably has its own problems with crime. Chattanooga is closer to the mountains (it's surrounded by mountains) so you might enjoy the scenery there better than in Memphis.

If you have a family to raise, I'd probably choose Chattanooga. But if you're looking for a more urban atmosphere, some excitement, I'd choose Memphis.
