Interesting Weather Website
I know a lot of people from elsewhere have questions about tornadoes and other severe weather in the Tennessee area.
This is an interesting look at severe weather in general: http://www.wsmv.com/severeweatherawareness/index.html
One of the more interesting things is the tornado section. You can put your cursor over different states and it will show the average number of tornadoes for the past few decades. Surprising (at least for me) is that some of the states where people live who have expressed a great fear of tornadoes in Tennessee actually have more tornadoes on average than does Tennessee. Perhaps they're not as severe there, or Tennessee has gotten more in recent years--that I don't know.

It's right under the main heading ("Are You Prepared?"); there's an icon of a tornado over to the left. If you still can't find it let me know.

Thank you. Excellent resource!
Florida and Oklahoma on a tornadoes per square mile basis are not good places to live.

That's funny that Florida has so many. I never hear about them, and we've certainly never had one near where I live.

If I understand it correctly, tornadoes in Florida are mostly spawned from hurricanes, so your location may be a factor.

That sounds right. You probably don't hear much about the tornadoes . . . because the hurricane has already blown everything in its path away.

The tornadoes near Orlando in 1998 killed about 41 people. This past February, they had tornadoes that killed at least 21 people. It was national news. Florida leads the United States in tornadoes per square mile. I got my first introduction to tornadoes while living in Orlando in 1998. We did not get a direct hit, but it really does sound like a freight train.

Tornados
I've only witnessed 2 tornados up close & personal. Once, lightening hit the phone pole in front of my apt., and I saw the twister go by. It sure does sound like a train about to come through the wall. Another time, I was standing at the copier at work & saw the clouds do this wierd twisty thing, then a spout came down. Unfortunately, it flung a weather helicopter into some power lines over the Niagara River.
