Default Political News

What are the best newspapers/magazines to get to keep up with the state political scene? I'm assuming local newspapers may have brief articles, but what about detailed news?

The Tennessean used to cover the state government fairly well, although often with a bias. There used to be two main newspapers in Nashville: The Tennessean and The Banner--The Tennessean generally favored the Democrats/liberal politics and The Banner the Republican/conservative politics. Unfortunately, The Banner (the afternoon newspaper) ceased publication about ten years ago. I sometimes wonder how long The Tennessean will last; newspapers in general are having a very hard time these days due to the economy and the Internet. They have not learned to adjust to the "new paradigm," and I'm not sure they can. The Tennessean doesn't seem to have as much hard news as it once did, and during the week the paper can be fairly thin these days.

What you're looking for however is probably The Tennessee Journal published by M. Lee Smith Publishers. It used to be a weekly newsletter; I believe now that it's only available online (but I'm not sure about that). It concentrates on the state government.

The Nashville Business Journal covers state government legislation when it concerns business or the economy.

It's probably of no interest to you, but the local PBS station has a program called The Tennessee Legislature Report which does a fairly good job of covering the state issues. It's on once a week when the legislature is in session.
