Default Areas of TN/KY to focus on for relocation

Hey there! My family is originally from MI and we moved all the way down to East Texas 3 years ago! Shwew! Well... East TX just isn't cutting it for us. We'd like to get out of the "bible belt," yet, we like being south enough to be "in the south." We love the weather! Basically, we've looked at certain areas of TN & KY. We've been researching a lot online, but I figured I could get some more straight-fwd'ness thru this forum? My job can move with me (Graphic Designer) but we'd like to have ideas of where my hubby can hone in on for work (manufacturing or IT)! Any advise would be much appreciated!!! ~ thx!

*oh, and for our "wish list": good schools - safe, friendly & family-oriented - small-town feel but want to be less than an hour from some big time fun (concerts, fairs, parks, beautiful sights, big events, etc)! ~thx again, everyone!

Don't get me wrong - I'm not against the "bible belt" areas... but where we're at now has very little community involvement - it's all in the churches. We want more culture than just that. Areas that we've looked at so far were Clarksville, Collierville, Knoxville TN & Owensboro, KY & even Jonesboro, AR.

If you're not wanting a repeat of the Bible belt experience, I'd think a college town like Knowville would be your best bet. Would Lexington, Kentucky be too big for your tastes? It always struck me as an area that had a lot going for it, and it seemed pretty transplant-friendly.

Yep. I'm a transplant in Knoxville and love it. I don't go to church.

If you go into some of the places, even if it is a larger town, it can be like you describe. Knoxville will probably be a breath of fresh air.

Kentucky can be even more strange, and it starts to have the Indiana "Jesus Land" vibe. I'm sure the cities are better. But the weather is not good. Snow storms and tornadoes.

I'd probably move back to Florida before I ever moved to Kentucky and that is really, really saying something. I swore I would never go back to Florida.

Collierville as in right outside of Memphis? Collierville itself is mostly nice, but that means for your big events you're going into Memphis, something I'd really think about. Memphis can be a fun place to visit, but I didn't enjoy living there, or raising my family there. Left there as soon as I could.

My son lives in Knoxville and loves it. I love to visit him there, lots to do, and you are closer to mountains and nice parks.
And maybe it's just me, but wandering around in downtown Knoxville has a much more friendly feel to it than wandering around in downtown Memphis.

I vote for Knoxville also. We do not attend church and it doesn't hinder us here at all.Bill and I are both transplants to Knoxville. Knoxville has a mix of people that all seem to accept one another and co-exist.
I second what Dubble T said about downtown Knoxville. I love living here in Knoxville and it is home. I came from a very small rural town in upstate NY and Knoxville is the first city I've ever lived in but it reminds me of a big overgrown town. I think Knoxville should be added as a serious contender to your list.

thanks for all of the suggestions... i have a friend from high school that lives in sevierville just outside knoxvilel and he swears by it (but 1 opinion just isn't enough to make another big move with my family). I mapped it - it would be about 11 hrs from my hometown and to my current place in TX. Perfect! And i've been thru those mtns... b-e-a-utiful!

Any word on the job and housing markets over there? I know with the economy now they're both nill... but in general, or from before the slump? As I said, my job can move wherever I go. My hubby is in manufacturing now, moving toward IT when he's done with school.
