Looking for a fresh start
Our family is looking to make a fresh start. We've had enough of South Florida and Florida in general.
We have two girls a teen and a tween. We want an area that has seasons with snow in the winter. Mountains would be nice. Good schools for the girls where english is NOT a second language. We want the old town feel you see in movies (yeah I know doesn't everyone! LOL), but seriously, I want to open up a bakery on Main Street. The top 5 places we are considering are Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, & Colorado.
Any advice, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Knoxville could use a good bakery. Come on up!
We're from southwest Florida, have a nine-year old in the school system, and we couldn't be happier. We've been here four years.
I know that Knoxville sounds like a large city, but it really isn't. It feels more like a large town. Come visit. I bet you'll love it.

A long time friend of mine moved from here (southeast Flrida) to Knoxville and she just loves it. It is one of the areas we'd like to visit. Thank you for your added recommendation!

Try Greeneville, TN...it is beautiful especially if you locate just outside of town in the Chuckey, TN area. Beautiful mountain views out Highway 107. Has a very old historic downtown area. I live in Knoxville now which is also nice, but Greeneville is definitely a smaller town with that small town feel.

Currently living in South Florida, and currently on my way out. But when I was moving down here from Indiana, (Eastern) TN was the most beautiful of all the states I went through. It reminded me a lot of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The smokeys were like something from a dream. I completely appreciate Surfergirl67's desire to move her family to a "down home" and wholesome kind of place. I don't think the cost of living in TN, at least more rural parts would be very high, as many people live there with little as was stated earlier. A nice house nestled in the woods is what I'm all about!
I have a good friend who tried his hand at Colorado (Denver area) earlier this year for six months. His experience of it was that the place was very expensive, just as much as South FL, and the people were not particularly friendly to "outsiders", kind of shut away. Anyway, good luck in your new home search!

Check out Berea, KY it really does look like a movie set. It's a small college town nestled in the mountains. The downtown square is beautiful and full of shops, cafes, and art galleries as Berea is considered the epicenter of the Appalachian Arts and Craft scene. It's also only 35 minutes from Lexington for bigger city amenities.

The cost of living in Knoxville, and most of our cities as far as I know, are very reasonable.

Hello My wife and I just made a buy in Tennessee. We are from San Diego CA and are fed up with CA ways. We have been going to Nashville for the last 14 years for the music CMA Fest/Fan Fair. We fell in love with the land as well as most of the people we have met there. We just picked up 5.6 acres it has a 1/2 acre fresh water spring on it. It is in the mountians and they have many more choices on property. Of your choices I would pick TN Look at tax rates and compare TN is not even half of what we pay in CA . I love Colorado but it get's very cold there. Any way I can get you all kinds of good info on TN if you would like let me know.

Hi SurferGirl
I'm from West Kendall(Miami) and after living in Miami for 40 years(I'm 47) we have decided to move out of Florida within the next year. I'm married and we have two sons, 16 and 18, and we're considering a move to Tennessee. The cost of living here is out of control and only to get worse when property taxes and homeowner's insurance increase within the next two years!
