My honest suggestion, since your mom lives here, would be to wait until school lets out and stay with her a month or two, if this is possible. Most transplants I've talked to who aren't happy are people who thought they wouldn't mind the commute and the lack of conveniences, etc. Or thought they'd get used to it, and just never have.
Just for example, for me to make it to Chat. by 7 am Chat. time, dropping kids off, etc. means getting up no later than 4:30 AM. Any doctor's appt. I have to add @ 2 hours travel time. I make a 50 mile round trip to go grocery shopping. There's no trash pickup outside city limits. The only stores are Sav-a-Lot, Walmart (not the best one I've seen) Dollar Store and Freds. Very few restaurant options. I'm not big on shopping & eating out & catch movies on satellite so not a big deal, and I'm not into paying 5 bucks for a cup of coffee, but I do hear a lot of complaints on the no coffee shop score. Banks all close at 4 or 5, which is a hassle if you're getting in from work later than that. Most everything else closed by 8 or 9. One or two gas stations open all night, plus Walmart. No delivery food. "hi-speed" internet @$50 a month, last I checked. Utilities can be a little spotty some places outside city limits.
Public schools aren't too bad, but if you're someone who wants private- not too many options.
In other words for some people it's a terrific place to live. For others the costs outweigh the benefits. It all depends on what your priorities are.
