Just be careful. Not many people can go from a huge city to a very small town and not be dissatisfied. My grandfather did it. He came from NY, NY and moved to the middle of nowhere in Canada. He was a rare exception.
I think that depends on 'where you are comming from' In the sense of who you are as a person. If you are talking about a young barely married couple used to the nightlife and the big city amenities, you are dead center on. But you take people like Myself and my wife with two kids. The fact my wife and I have 'been there done that' as far as city life goes, and heartily wish to keep our kids out of a gang, this place is bliss. Our kids are going to resent it as teenagers, but one day I know they will realize we did the right thing.

Ok I dont live in Tennessee but we live in Florida! We visited recently Pigeon Forge and surrounding areas - here's my take on it....

You will be familiar I presume with Kissimmee and Disney?? Pigeon forge is a smaller version of that except it has trees and Mountains in the distance. We liked the Mountains etc but found the Pigeon Forge area too much like Disney and we arent into that. However I would definately visit there again and would consider a move there maybe one day in the future but NOT that particular area.

I know you have not visited but I do think it is worth your while going there even if it is for a few days so you can get a "feel" for the place.

Like I say apart from the main strip of Pigeon Forge we liked the area immensely - and Hubby loved driving along those great hilly and winding roads!!! lol

We are considering a visit in the autumn/winter time now!!

I agree, Pigeon Forge and especially Gatlinburg (right up the Rd) are great places to visit, amungst all those tourist you would be surprised how many local Tennesseans are there. It's like having a mini vacation place that is always changing and having different stuff to do, you should see that place in winter, WOW! All the Christmas lights are amazing! But it is a great place to go shop and let the kids have fun, Dollywood is actually more enjoyable for us than Disney ever was. Gatlinburg is great for museums and galleries. Thomas Kincaid has a beautiful gallery there. But you are right, I wouldn't want to live there or even close to it hahahahhaha

You know that's true, and I was sooo surprised when I discovered just how many local people go to Pigeon Forge. I actually can't stand the place, although I do like it a ton more than anything in the Orlando area. But I do know a lot of people here in Knoxville who make regular trips to Pigeon Forge just to go shopping and eat out. I mean like every weekend. The traffic is horrendous, but at least the mountains are beautiful, and the people are friendly.

I couldn't imagine going every weekend! But there are some great stores there that we don't have here, like the Christmas Palace, I LOVE that place any time of year. We go maybe 6 times a year.

I think that I may want to move to Sevierville or Pigeon Forge. I am living in Tennessee very near to Chattanooga and I am preferring the "tourista" Las Vegas strip of road surrounded by mountains as opposed to the urban sprawl that is taking place here. Jobs, Husband needs a warehouse job. He is a shipping and receiving god of sorts. Now how do we go about finding out about rentals in the Pigeon Forge, Sevierville areas and about this type of employment. Any and all help is appreciated. I've given myself a year to two years to actually move. BTW, what is the difference between sevierville and Pigeon Forge? Geographically speaking. It looks to us as if Sevierville is a small town with metro amenities, (attractions etc.).

Wow, amazing on different views, I must agree on some.. We came from Florida in May, and I wanted to go completely rural cows and all. But it seems that city slicker cowboy wannabees ain't no picnic for the locals. I have not let myself admit that the move was a bad idea, yet there is a peacefulness to living here. Sometimes I think too much peacefulness. But we are here and darn it gonna tough it out one way or another. But you should definately look at the property in person. Sevierville in my opinion had too many trailers, not the nice double wides I mean trailers with junk yards in front.. Many beautiful homes with beautiful views, though they sit atop hills and the realtor never shows you online what sits in between the hills.. I don't know if I was the only one to experience this but it got to the point that we had check the zoning specifications prior to looking at property in that said county....

Sevierville is a tourist town. Not as bad as Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, but most people drive through there to get to the tourist area. Now, they are routing the tourist traffic right through the middle of the town. It's kind of a nightmare.

I have no idea what you mean by metro amenities. To me, that means it has an art museum, or something like that. I guess to most people, nowadays, it means it has a Walmart.

Good luck finding a small town next to good jobs and no urban sprawl. Knoxville has the same thing. I have never been, but people on this forum say that Johnson City has jobs and not much urban sprawl. You might want to try that.

Default Moving from MN

Hello all,

My wife and I are thinking about moving down to TN from MN in about 5 years or so but we are checking areas out now. We had actually settled on the Sevierville area because it had things we liked for activities. But after reading some of the posts about the area, I am a little bit leary now. When we come down, we will be buying our house and hopefully living out in the country away from a lot of the hustle and bustle so it really does not bother us that much unless we decide to come into town. Given the fact that by the time we move down there...I will be almost 61.....we figure if we buy the house outright, that we should be able ot pretty much make ends meet with SS income and maybe a part time job.

Like some of the other posters. I Love TN as well. I am originally from VA and my uncle lived in Knoxville. And worked for the AEC in Oak Ridge. So I am pretty familiar with the state.
