I'm interested in the HISTORY of the area.
If you think this place is remote, then you should try the drive from Cravenstown through Cooketown then on over to Jimtown on the back side of the mountain. Not sure if they have put gravel down yet as it was mostly dirt and sand last time I went but it is a great ride in the country.

If you would like some history, you might consider pulling over and asking some of the local folks are most are more than pleased to chat about the area.

I must admit my bias towards Livingston and Overton county, as it was a place that just suited me in every way. Livingston (our county seat) is a small town that wishes to keep its small town look and feel and recently spent large portion of its budget to place all the overhead phone and power lines underground and to install post lighting instead. It is quite possibly one of the most beautiful little towns in all of Tennessee. We have Dale Hollow and Center Hill lake near by, not to mention Hope Lake over in Muddy Pond. (local secret) As well as creeks, ponds, streams and rivers at every turn, making for great summer afternoons out of doors.

Out here up on the mountain, it is extremely rural and a true sense of community living permeates the area. While like most places where people have resided for generations, the population is a bit suspicious of new arrivals, but not in a malicious manner. I have found the people to be quite warm and welcoming. There are few places so wide and spacious, free from sprawl that has occurred in many parts of the Eastern US. I often refer to this place as not being of a different location but of a different time, when you could lean against the fence and chat with your neighbor instead of sending them an email.

I bought 5 acres on Wilder mountain I guess it was in 06 and went back to see it in 07 and haven't been since . I keep seeing all these negative posts, and a lot more possitive. Is anyone on these posts living up there.I own lot 246, don't even remember the name of the road but it's somewhere in the middle. How much does it cost to get water to your property and are the roads paved yet, they were spread with rock last time I was there.

Default water on wilder mountain

there is no city water in the area. You have to do a well. I would have my lot perked for septic before I thought about doing a well. I have heard that there are problems with septic systems.

As far as I know, county water only makes it as far as Twinton and Fentress county is not likely to construct a water main across the East Fork river from Clarkrange/Grimsley area. For those people having to put in a well for water, I would suggest some form of basic filtration system as the ground water tends to have a higher sulfur content. (natural coal and gas seams) However I have not heard any complaints from residents thus far.

As to septic systems, not only are they common, they are probably superior in many respects to treatment facilities in towns and cities. As the water is perked through the soil, eventually returning it to the natural ground water table without the need for chemicals. Septic systems do require occasional maintenance, but this depends upon how many people permanently live at a residence and how an individuals habits are when using water.

Hope that is of some help.

I tried that drive once.Got as far as Cooktown and I don't know if I made a wrong turn or not but the road disentegrated into not much more than a logging road.I actually began to get stuck in my 2 wheel drive 4-Runner so I turned around.
I was trying to get all the way over to hwy.52.The map shows you can but I'm not sure. Can that be done?

You didn't make a wrong turn, it goes from pavement to chipper run, to dirt for a spell. There are a few wash outs and some rocks, but I have driven it in small pick-up and it wasn't too bad. I have heard rumor that they put down chipper run to the other side of the mountain but I have not driven it since summer so I can't say for sure. I walked it last time from the firetower to 52 so I could take some pictures. The backside of the mountain is a bit, well.... steep with a hair pin cut back so stay on your toes. The view is worth it. (make sure you stay right otherwise you end up out on Egypt knob) When you get to the valley floor, you will have Skinner mountain on your left and Glenobey to your right. This whole area is just beautiful and I have been keeping an eye out for tracts for sale in this area, but it is hard to come by.

We live in Wilder not too far from your lot. Great things are going on up here and improvements are being made by the residents! A few things could be done better by the developer. We are in the process of looking at what we as residents can do to address the issues that are the developer's responsibility. We now have several sheriff's deputies that live up here full-time and we are looking to get a fire truck up here permantly so we have immediate access to water. We are asking AirVac to do a presentation on their services to all of the residents here in the Wilder Mountain Development if anyone ever had a medical emergency. Things are beginning to pick up and head in a direction where you can live in beautiful surroundings of the mountains and also have a quick response for fire, medical and police assistance!
