The CDC surveyed 1.3 million people across the country about their level of happiness. Using those responses as well as objective measures such as how crowded that state is, air quality, home prices and other factors known to impact quality of life, Tennessee came in as the 4th-happiest state in the country. The only states "happier" than Tennessee are Louisiana, Hawaii, and Florida (?). To be fair, the survey was done between 2005-2008 so some was before Katrina hit Louisiana and before the real estate bust in Florida.

The full list can be found here:

No surprise...this is a wonderful place!

I notice that most of the top 10 are sunny and warm...

Someone had DM'd me about this list. They couldn't understand why Florida was on the list and that LA was first. Thanks for clearing that up, JMT. I BET that if the survey were done today we would be first or second.

The list is a bit ludicrous, though. They couldn't have taken a worse snapshot regarding this timeframe. There are some states that would be much higher on the list. Utah and Nebraska come to mind, and quite a few others.

People are starting to realize that warm weather isn't everything. Of course we still have great weather and so does Hawaii. Plus we didn't fall off a cliff with Florida and Arizona.

Finally a survey that looks true. I get a good laugh out of the ones that list income as a reason to live there. Lack of crime might be a reason, but income--never. And I expecially find it interesting that lack of income is a reason to do crime. Morals and lack are two very different things. We used to live in one of the poorest places in America but we not only didn't lock our doors, our door didn't have a lock.

One other commonality I noticed among many of the top 10...they are often the same states that rank high on obesity lists, so this is just more proof that eating makes you happy and staying thin, well, doesn't!

...so, yeah, it describes me...fat, warm, and happy!

(I'm not going to say a word about the list and education...)

And I currently live in the most unhappy place (although I personally am very happy) - can't wait to move to our recently purchased home in TN.

I am not in one of the happiest states and I know why! I wish I was in VA (my home), and Tennessee is looking pretty good right now. Good for you all!

Am I missing something or is there 51 states listed on that link?
