Well, even living here I learn something new about Tennessee every day. I had no idea that anyone was considering a Sand Hill Crane hunting season.

I've heard that crane is the best tasting waterfowl, better than duck or goose. Haven't personally tried it, though...

Their body is not as big as a turkey. They were heavily hunted for food during the great depression here in FL. My late FIL told me about how they hunted and ate them and they were very good eating. A delicacy back then when spam was rationed. They are very plentiful here now but I hope no hunting season will come for a long time. They are to much like pets around here. They are big looking but mostly legs and neck.

WHY do we need to hunt sandhill cranes?

Are they overpopulated? A couple of weeks ago we canoed down the Buffalo and there were several that followed us all the way down.

Cranes tend to cause damage to crops, well up here in Wisconsin anyways....

From what the news said tonight.. over population. But as the article stated.. the Whooping Crane maybe shot.. not knowing the differences.. Big bird.. shoot it !! I think they are making a big mistake because the two birds have similar habitat..

Amen. Whooping cranes got hunted once to near extinction. No reason to hunt sandhills unless it is proven that they are over populated and causing severe crop damage. Then and only then special permits given to trained hunters that know the difference in the two species. I can see both sides. I just hope there is a better solutions like transferring some to a state without many where they will do little if any damage.
