Question I want to know more about Savannah, TN...anyone?

I have found some beautiful homes w/property in Savannah, TN. I don't anything about that area. I'm worried it's too country for us. Ihe home you can get for your dollar is amazing. Location-wise it would be great for us regarding family but it isn't very close to any major city (a concern).

I would love some input from someone that may know about it or even live there. Thanx.

Wink I want to know more about Savannah, TN

Savannah TN is a very small town with limitations for everything. It is in Hardin county and the total population of the county is 23,000. There are over 125 churches. You would be 60 miles sw of Jackson, TN, 115 east of Memphis and 125 southwest of Nashville, TN. You have to go somewhere even to shop, unless you shop at Walmart. Only recently has liquor by the drink become available and that is within a certain mileage from the river. Don't ask. You can purchase beer at Kroger but not wine. Beer is also available at convenience stores in the county. Culture wise, if you don't like country music you are at a big disadvantage. There is a theater group with performances a couple times a year. There is a cinema with 6 screens and they do get first run movies usually a wek or so after they are released. Another thing about Savannah, everybody knows all your business and if they don't, they will tell something anyway.
My advice, think twice before relocating here.

Default visited Savannah in '01

My brother living in Savannah in 2001 so I went to see him a few times there.

My brief observations:

* very small, and wanting to keep it that way (may be good or bad)

* fishing (Catfish) is king there

* everyone knows everything about everyone

* decent bowling alley for the size town

It's not the type of place I would want to raise a family, but it might be for you.

Also, if you want to go somewhere bigger, Florence, Alabama would probably be best as I believe it to be closer than Jackson (but smaller).

Default Savannah

We actually just got back from a long weekend in Pickwick Dam, TN, which is about 15 miles from Savannah. Country music and water activities are the biggest entertainment in Hardin County, TN. There is a huge festival in September hosted by Darryl Worley, a country music star. He is a native of Savannah. Also, the home of Buford Pusser(the sherrif the movie Walking Tall was about)is in the next county over. So, it's a pretty laid back country lifestyle. There is a lot to do though, provided you like fishing, swimming, jet skiing, etc. There is a movie theatre, several state parks, etc nearby. We love it there, but we are outdoor people, who like country music. There are also some bars, etc, in Hardin County if that's what your into. The scenery is beautiful, and it's very quiet. The people are super nice, and I think it would be a great place to raise a family. For large cities nearby, you have an hour or two to drive. There's Jackson,TN about 40 miles away. There's Memphis,TN, Huntsville,AL, Clarksville,TN, and Nashville,TN about 100 miles away. You can also go back into MS to Tupelo, which is about a 1 1/2 hour drive, but it's not much bigger than Savannah, which is home to between 7-8,000 people. There is also a low crime rate. You can find out more info about the area at City of Savannah & at Hardin County, Tennessee. I really hope all this helps.

My Family And I Own Waterfront Lots In Savannah Tn And Are In The Process Of Getting Things Ready To Build A House There.
Savannah Has Alot Of Things To Do As Long As You Don't Want To Shop All Day. If Shopping Is What You Like There Are Things Like Wal-mart, Radio Shack, Shoe Stores, Dollar Stores, Tsc And A Few Grocery Stores, It Also Has A Large Flea Market That Is Fun To Go To When It Is Not Too Hot. It Has Alot Of History As It Is Close To Shiloh And The Home Of Buford Pusser Also The Cherry Mansion You Can Tour All Three Locations. Pickwick Dam Is Also Close By As Is The Wayne Jerrolds Park. Big River Boats Like The Delta Queen And Etc. Dock And Play Music And So Forth. Savannah Also Host The River Run So Like The Other Post If You Like Music And The Outdoors You Will Love Savannah It Is Great. Oh Yeah All The People We Have Met In The Last Year Have Been Great Very Nice And Easy To Get Along With And Always Wanting To Help In Some Way.

Default Savannah, Tn.

Savannah is a small town located on Hwy.64 and the Tenessee River. Not much there and not close to anything either. Shopping, even for groceries is very limited. Closest Town of any size is Florence, Alabama, maybe 60 Miles and it's not outstanding either. The rest of what I have to post is characteristic ot most of Southern Tennessee:

Crime rates are generally low except that Meth is epidemic. Gang activity and organized crime are virtually nonexistent. Mostly good people. Most of these Communities were and are somewhat isolated so Family relationships are exceedingly complex and defy comprehension. Ignorance is epidemic. People are very clannish. Infrastructure maintenance is most often abysmal. This is about as close to 1950 as it's possible to get. They don't care if there is a better way to do things, they are only interested in continuing the present course. Most of this area is economically depressed and they aren't going to take the action necessary to better it. On the flip side, these areas offer probably the ultimate in tranquility. Very quite. Land prices are rapidly increasing, but bargains are still available.

There is a paper mill in Counce very near Savannah just across Pickwick dam. It smells AWFUL. The locals say that it smells like money. Or that you get use to it. And it only smells when there is a storm or strong winds. But it smells enough that our family hated it.

southern town girl is on a distinguished road
Default Savannah, Tennessee

I have lived in Savannah all my life, 54 yrs. to be exact, & have raised 4 girls here. Some things written about Savannah is true & some doesn't describe us at all.....
Hardin Co. has one of the best school systems around. Our high school was redone a few years ago, & our elem. schools are excellent. We also have a few private schools that I have heard are very good also. Our sports programs in the schools are great. In the summer we have very good sports programs also. Our 14 yr old baseball team placed 2nd in the World Series, & that's quiet a honor for a small town. We are also the place where the NAIA Football games are played each yr in December.
We have a great convention & visitors center. The riverboats make thier stop when passing thru, docking at Wayne Jerrolds Park. We have visitors off those boats from all over the US & some foreign countries. We receive the greatest comments from these visitors about our town such as...we've looked forward to docking here, it was the highlight of our trip. We've also had many people relocate to Savannah, because they fell in love with our town while visiting off of one of the riverboats.
It's true we don't have lots of places to shop, but we're adding stores all the time. We don't think anything about driving 29 miles to Corinith, Ms, which has several nice places to shop, or 49 miles to Florence, Ala. which also has most any kind of store you would want to shop at. These kind of shopping trips we look forward to. Also, we have more grocery stores then we need, so the selection is good.
It's true, we are a close knit community, but with more people moving here, it's getting harder to know who's who anymore. But as far as kids are concerned, wouldn't you rather know something about where & who your kids are around?? I would think in a larger city it would be very hard for me to let one of my girls go home with a playmate if I didn't know anything about them. You have to be careful these days.
I think we are known for our acts of kindness & friendship to each other & visitors. We hold benefits for people in need, such as cancer or heart victims, burned home victims, etc.
Real estate is cheaper here, then some places, or as I'm told.
But sizing up Savannah, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. It has been good to my family for generations. I think you would be making a wise decision making Savannah your hometown.
