Have a safe enjoyable trip and be sure to wave to me while you are in town.
Please don't forget to come back on here after you get back and give us all your impressions of the area. I love seeing my home town through others eyes, good bad or indifferent.

Hotel
We stayed at the AmericInn in Jonesborough over Easter and were very happy with it. They have a heated indoor pool and a continental breakfast that actually offered a lot of choices. It's only a year old and still looks new. The beds are queens, not doubles, in the two bedroom unit. It's only minutes to downtown Jonesborough as well as JC.

I agree with Cugargm, and if you want to stay a bit closer to JC/Gray (although from the AmericInn, it is almost a 6 mile straight shot up Boones Creek RD to North JC) There is also the Jamison INN off Boones Creek Rd at 26. There is the Best Western off Roan ST in JC. There is the Jamison INN off HWY 93 in South Kingsport.
If you need some phone numbers, PM me, I'll grab the phone book.

any info, good or bad, is greatly appreciated. we are looking for a family friendly neighborhood, good schools of course, doesnt need to be to closer to stores/malls, i don't mind a 15-20 drive.
thanks again

I left NJ last July 20th, crossed the Tennessee line on that day and will never look back. I lived in Manalapan, NJ, rat race snob town,.
We decided on the Nashville area as my husband was able to transfer there. There are many areas out of Nashville that meet your requirments. Williamson County schools are top knotch, and you can be in smaller towns like Nolensville and Fairview and still be closer to Nashville which has a good job market. There is also Brentwood and Franklin, but more pricy, less pricy, Spring Hill. Middle Tennesee is very pretty and has people from all over.

Jonesborough TN is the oldest city in the state, is small but is not far from Johnson City, property is a little lower, easy access to the nolichucky river and whitewater rafting, quaint little town that celebrates Jonesborough Days every year, has live music, vendors selling home made local food. This city will never grow to big because it has no major highway to it. Might be what your looking for. If I remember right the original jail is still standing and a grist mill, The area was settled in the late 1700's
The city has changed the spelling from Jonesborough to Jonesboro then back to Jonesborough again in the early 80's so if your doing a search you may bring up more info by trying both.

Newbie to the forum and plan on visiting the Tri-Cities area of NE Tn next week. Hubby and I are contemplating a move within the next 18months and thought this would be an ideal time to start looking.
Oh, JZer, being from NJ how did you find Tn?....I didn't mean by using a map...LOL...Did it meet your expectations?
I have a friend who moved to Big Sandy, Tn, but that didn't look like my cup of tea. I did find the eastern part of Tn. more to my liking.
Appreciate all views including any ex-Jerseyans opinions on taxes, insurance etc. compared to NJ.

left jersey
We left NJ after 47 years of traffic, pollution, high property taxes and crowds.Moved to Vermont. It turn out that taxes are higher for retirees than in any other state.
We will be looking at property in Tennessee the last week in June. The scenery is the same but the taxes are far less (47th in the nation). Although we will leave great people and good neighbors, paying income taxes on social security, pension and any interest will cost us over 1000 a month.
Still visit grandchildren and children in Jersey. Rather they visit us!
