I lived in Tullahoma when I was a kid. I went to West Middle School and Tullahoma High School. We lived out a ways towards Lynchburg. I have nothing but fond memories of the area. Hmmm. Maybe I should move back?

Moving to Tennessee
My wife and I are moving to Tennesse withing the next couple of years.
I have my own business and my wife works for the school system in Dade
county. We bought a house in Big Sandy, TN last spring and have traveled
there approx. 8 times so far. Everytime we go there we don't want to come
home. The people are so nice, the weather is beautiful and the cost of living is much lower than Florida !!!!
We wanted to make sure we really wanted to live there before we "jump" into
a moving truck. So far, every trip we have made, during every month of the
year has been wonderful.
It may be the best place to retire in the United States:
-Weather is moderate and significantly cooler than Florida.
-You don't have to worry about Hurricanes and getting hit by a tornado
is like hitting the lottery.
-Property taxes are much lower than Florida.
-Vehicle and Home Owners insurance are much lower than Florida.
-No Income Tax
-Much less traffic
-Centrally located / 1 x day drive to majority of United States
-Some of the most beautiful country in the United States.
I recommend Tennessee Highly !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all, This post has me written all over it. I am from Clearwater, Fl and bought a place up in Sparta last July. I am hoping to move up to tenn in the next couple of years but still don't know if that is what I want. I have been trying to get up there about every other month and meet more people and get the feel of living up there. I really love it there and would like to get horses once again. I am a single mom with a 20 year old son, who would not be comming with me because he is a city boy and loves the water. right now all my family is in FL but my brother just bought also in Sparta late last year and my sister has a second place in Ellijay Ga. What I really would like is what the retirees do. Spend time in both places. For all of you that made the move, do you have family up in TN or were you just so tired of the taxes and expenses that Fl keeps putting on us all. I know if I do decide to move up there I will lose exactly half of what I make down here. Anyway sorry for being so long but I hope the thread keeps going because it really is helpful to hear other people from Fl talk about their decisions.

Good for you Sandy!! I too moved to middle TN from Florida after 35 years. We were in Naples. I've never been so happy in my life. I do miss that salt air and the sound of the seagulls each morning, but I'd not go back for anything. We're currently looking for some land in north Maine for a summer home. But TN will always be our primary residence. The people are wonderful and I'm loving the change of scenery as the seasons go by. Just heaven for us!

We moved to middle TN in March from Florida. I have met so many people from Florida and California here. Yes it is very pretty and people are friendly but I am missing Florida's weather. I can count on my hand the number of days that have been enjoyable. There is nothing like the weather in FL. We had the hurricane but here you fear the tornados. So far I wish we would have spent more time here before we made such a big move. All I can say is research and think about the big picture before making a big jump. We left due to the cost of living. We just couldn't down size with taxes and homeowners. I wish we would have mapped out a plan B before we did this. Maybe rent and see how the area would go. I was a teacher down there and maybe it was the school I was at but they were on the ball. They teach old school here. Everyone is at a lot slower pace here. Good luck! Do your research!!!!!

I'm so sorry your move hasn't been all you'd dreamed of. I really hope you find your slice of heaven somewhere.

We have family at the far east end of the state and in NC on the state line. We've got our kids here - 14 to 22 years old. But that's it. Like Bones said, we've got better family here now!! BTW - we're about 20 minutes from Sparta, down near Spencer!!
As for the schools, we've found the very tiny school in Spencer that had a graduating class of less than 40 this past year if very far superior in quality to what we had in Naples, Florida. I've posted before on how much better it is, and how dedicated the entire staff is, but if anyone is wanting more info you can always e-mail me and I"d be glad to help with what I can.

My family and I are also seriously considering moving from the Fresno, CA area to the Manchester/Tullahoma, TN area. I'm a severe asthmatic and have been having increasingly worse/frequent episodes as well as severe sinus problems due to our poor air quality. I was raised in the Chicago area and we've spent 17 years here. Vacationed a lot (when we still lived in IL) in the Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Knoxville areas and loved it. Our business and building that houses it is up for sale and we need to get out of here and think it would be a good fit. From the research we've done, the air quality there is very good.
