Yeah,a good number of the inmates anymore are from surrounding areas & other places(not that we don't have any criminals in Putnam County...)
Come in here and commit crimes of opportunity like auto burglary,cons,shoplifting etc...
Plus Putnam is the only true "maximum security" jail in the upper cumberland so they regularly house other people's "bad" people,plus state & federal inmates(for which the county gets paid).
The story is that the state came in & told them they had to do something because the facility is so crowded they are having a hard time keeping the men & women seperated(which they are required to do).
The plan Executive Blaylock put in the Herald is to build a new county health department at the new place on Willow Ave.,move the county clerks office to the old health dept. building on S. Dixie & remodel the clerks office (on Washington) into the new women's facility.
Kinda funny since that building is the "old" jail...has come full circle...
