Well, it certainly has a nice park. Fall Creek Falls State Park is partially in Van Buren.
What about employment? You mentioned you were a young family; the opportuntities are going to be limited in Van Buren itself.

You could find the open land there; that area is a bit off the beaten path, and it relatively sparsely populated. It's a beautiful area for the most part. I would guess the biggest "industry" in Van Buren is the tourist trade due to the park.
As for photos, you might just Google for Spencer, TN or Van Buren, TN, or even Fall Creek Falls. Here's the state website: Tennessee State Parks: Fall Creek Falls Click on the photo gallery over to the right.

Hey,no offense...
But Spencer/Van Buren County dosen't have much of NOTHIN'!
Dosen't even have a hospital!...
Now,if you want open land that's your ticket! Plenty of that there!
I love the area,it's where my grandmother was born & raised. The schools are good,I guess...There's only a couple of 'em...
If you're lookin for something to do there though..............

Van Buren County Tennessee ~ is rural America.
And as posted here Spencer the county seat has one grocery store...one convience store...two mom and pop eating places...two dollar type stores...and four real estate offices...one factory. One tiny post office. One part time funeral home.
The elementary school and high school are located side by side. There's just one elementary and one high school for the entire county...but they are good.
FALL CREEK FALLS STATE PARK is in Van Buren County...although when you see an address it will say Pikeville that's because the post office there delivers the mail, but most of and the main part of Fall Creek Falls is in Van Buren County, Tennessse. The little county never gets much credit for anything but it's meth lab busts. The county has it's beauty and now with people swarming in the real estate booms...why do you think there are so many real estate offices in a tiny town? Now from Spencer and Van Buren County you are only minutes away from towns like Sparta, Cookeville and McMinnville with their super shopping, hospitals and eating places.
Yeah! those people on the mountain have got it made. They even have an annual county fair. The Rocky River Bluegrass shows are in Van Buren.

If I keep thinking about the lake and waterfall at Fall Creek Falls, I'm going to start thinking about buying a piece of property there!

thanks for the info, sounds like the area is very rural but might be getting ready to have a building boom. Is the nearest hospital in cookville?

I would guess a "building boom" isn't likely in the near future (although anything is possible). It's just a little too remote, and there's not the draw of a large lake like there is around someplace like Center Hill. Of course, a developer could come in and start a Fairfield Glades type of thing and advertise the hell out of it, so "never say never".
There might be some kind of medical center in McMinnville (I'm not sure), but I assume for anything serious people do go to Cookeville. Better care would be available there. And for anything they can't handle, patients are sent to Nashville, where every sort of medical care is available.

There is also a bank and liquor store. What else do you need.
