And quite a lazy lad. That's why he ran off to be with the Cherokees.

He was also one of the southerners who opposed the Civil War because he thought the south couldn't win. He wasn't too crazy about slavery either, as I recall.

I forgot to mention that Sam also ran a private school at Maryville.

Born right smack dab in the middle of Shenandoah Valley - thanks for that info, Ridgerunner.

blessings, Shen

I have read one book on Houston and recommend it highly. Title: Sam Houston. Author: James L. Haley. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press. ISBN: 0-8061-3644-8. Incidentally, the school he founded in Maryville was Tennessee's first.

Clarification: Other schools were in existence at the time, but they had been founded prior to 1796 when all of present day Tennessee was in North Carolina.

Houston was actually a slaveholder at one time but opposed Texas's admission to the Confederacy because he was a strong unionist.

Ah, yes, he was. I think I was thinking of this opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska act. He and a senator from Tennessee were the only two southerner senators to vote against it.

I used to be something of a "Civil War buff" and have been to many, but not all, of the battlefields. There's several in Middle Tennessee (Ft. Donelson, Stones River, Franklin, etc.), plus, of course, Shiloh near the Tennessee border. I pass historic markers every day on my way to work about the Battle of Nashville. Ft. Negley, the fort the union built in Nashville, has been renovated and there's a great view of downtown from there. If I'm remembering correctly, at one time Ft. Negley was the largest fort in the country.

There's a festival every year here in Maryville honoring Sam Houston. Very nice thing they put on. Tennessee and Texas have so many affiliations, it's neat. Thanks for the tip on the book.

I wouldn't quite call that lazy, tho. The life of a farmer just wasn't for him. He had to find his own way, and when he did, he did it with gusto.

blessings, Shen

And your speaking of running away reminds me that Davy Crockett ran away from home at 14. When he returned 3 years later he had grown up so much that his family didn't recognize him.
