Well, you could drive 64 through Somerville, Bolivar and Selmer, but then you'd miss the terrifying drive over Monteagle.

It takes about 6 hours by interstate. I can't imagine how long it would take via back roads.

You would still go over Monteagle if you go Hwy 64. However, I would not go that way due to construction on the highway around Savannah. It would probably take a long time.
Another route would be Hwy 72 through Corinth, MS, Muscle Shoals and Huntsville, AL. It would take a little longer than going through Nashville but not much. I believe it is 4 lane most of the way.

Memphis to Chattanooga is 350 miles going thru Nashville - and that's the quickest way since it's all Interstate. It's probably about 6 hours, depending on the number of pee stops...although I did it in 4.5 hours late one night years ago in an MG Midget

FWIW, I made the same trip via Hwy 64 one night back in the 70s (when it was 2 lanes all the way), and it took over 8 hours. Believe it or not, it was also 350 miles! Even though it looks further to go through Nashville, the Interstates aren't as winding, so the mileage ends up the same!

thanks, just trying to get my roads straight before we go. I found out on our last trip my husband "HATES" it when i go rogue and take back roads. lol, something about me being crazy and getting lost in the mountains at night. lol! I was trying not to drive off the edge so I didn't listen to much of the conversations. so it looks like Nashville it is. Thanks!

I have driven all 3 routes mentioned. The Interstate was boring, but quicker. Highway 64 and 72 were not as quick, not even close, but much more interesting. It's all in what best suits the driver.

Take 385 off of 240 to US72 east. Once you get in Mississippi it turns to all 4 lane, not interstate, but still 4 lane. Stay on 72 to the Sheffield, Muscle Shoals area and then take 72A to where it turns into I 565 thru Huntsville then onto US 72 again. That will take you onto I 24 about 20 miles east of Chattanooga. I have ran this way in an 18 wheeler and to me it is a much better route than I 40/I24. Less congestion and traffic, and Nashville is always a pain to drive around. It has a few traffic lights but to me it was a better way than the demolition derby on 40. Hwy 64 is getting better but there is still a lot of 2 lane to traverse that way. Its about 320 miles my way and 5 1/2 - 6 hrs driving.

I haven't driven U.S. 64 from Memphis to Chattanooga, TN, but it would seem that the 4-laning from Shelby County to 1-24 is about 80% complete. Could someone confirm this? Also, what is the status of the Somerville Beltway? Thanks.

I've driven it all 3 routes as well. I'd agree with westtnman...I usually went 72 through Huntsville and across N. Mississippi---4 lane.

More of 64 is 4 lane now than 2 lane...considerably faster than it was. If I remember right, today you're looking at about 290 miles Chattanooga-Memphis via Hwy 64.
