I love that drive. There are some cool places to see if you have any time to stop. Balmorrhea (sp) State Park has a very interesting spring fed swimming pool and there are some cabins you can rent for an inexpensive stop. Also, the Indian Lodge at Fort Davis State Park is a hotel run by the state park system that is elegant in a West Texas way. And of course there's always Big Bend, but that's a trip in itself. Ahhhh, what I'd give to be there right now....

Mike:
I drive San Antonio- El Paso several times a year. The largest addition since your last trip will be the hundreds of windmills which have been put up about
20 miles east of Fort Stockton. For service the Loves Truck Stop in Van Horn
provides world class service. If you stop in Van Horn check out the John Maddin "Haul" of Fame at Chueys restaurant on the main drag.

I am originally from El Paso, but now live in the houston area so I make this trip at least 3 times per year. The speed limit is 80mph starting just outside El Paso almost all the way to Kerrville, but watch out the state troopers are on the look out if you speed even 3MPH over the limit. I know I have been pulled over 3 times in the last year. Have gotten 2 warnings and one ticket so far, I think they are just bored sometimes so they find any little reason to pull you over. Bring plenty of Music CDs (I have satellite radio which really helps out in this case) or someone to talk to because it's a loooong drive.

Back With More....
Thought I'd bring this back. I-10 in West Texas really intrigues me. Many people might think it's not interesting, but I'd have to disagree. It's the complete opposite of Interstate 35 if you think about it. Many of you already know about 35 and all it contains, but I-10 in West Texas is actually quite picturesque in some places. There are numerous rock cuts near Kerrville, Sheffield, and Ozona. There are the Davis Mountains and other vast mountain ranges near Van Horn. We just take for granted the scenery due to the fact that there are no large towns out that way. And it is not uncommon to sometimes be the only car on the road at any given time. That's just part of the intrigue of the West.

I wish there was a large town in between SA and El Paso. In California, a real estate guru is building a city in the middle of the Valley out of scratch. It is expected to have over 200,000 people once it gets going soon. Quay Valley Ranch. Look it up .

Just came back that way from Mississippi, the speed limit is now 80 for most of it. Still pretty much miles and miles of nothing.
have a safe trip.

Agreed, Guerilla. I've suggested Fort Stockton before. Its location is quite good, being near the gateway to Big Bend and not too far from Marfa (under the circumstances). It's only 80 miles southwest of Odessa. Just think: After you drive a 100-mile stretch from Ozona and the only town you have before Ft Stockton is Bakersfield (two gas stations and a couple of houses), it becomes an oasis once you arrive there.
Maybe we could bring that real estate guru to Texas. I've got a few places he can try.

Businesses have already started lining up. A NASCAR track will be built, as well as a lot of retail establishments and homes. The main economy will be IT and retail.

I'll take a guess. The pic on the left is between Junction and Kerrville. The one on the right looks like the westbound approach to Ozona. I remember Ozona like the back of my hand.
