Job Oppertunities?????
Hi everbody,
Does anyone have any information about what the job market looks like right now in Texas??
I will be living in Fort Hood in about a week and wanted to know how hard or maybe easy it is to find a job. The area I am looking for would be, daycare teacher/ daycare mom or working in a Airport as a ground hostess (is that what you call them ladies?? They sit at the desk and do the check in)
Being German/swedish citizen (but having the green card) how much would that affect me getting a job as a foreginer??
Any information is appreciated. Thanks again for your time in advance

not sure about the green card thing, but remember, as a spouse of an active duty military member, you get spousal preference points for DOD (Dept of Defense jobs), AAFES jobs (AAFES is the company that runs all military commissaries and exchanges), and well heck, any jobs on post. Ft Hood is HUGE so try something on post first. let me know how you like Ft Hood and the area. i am moving there in September! see ya then!

Assuming that you are at least bilingual, there will be a variety of jobs that should be available and would love to have you, airlines just being the most obvious.

Just a word of advice. I grew up in Texas and now live somewhere else. Texas prides itself on everything. They are a fun people and very proud. Try not to speak negatively about the state until you make good friends. Texans hate it when people come to their state and complain or say things are better somewhere else. It does not matter that they may be better somewhere else. Just try and find things to like about the place and you will fit in. Ft. Hood is not in a good location, I don't know the job situation. Mostly meduium/small towns around. Ft. Worth is 2hours north and Austin 2 hours south maybe closer. I hope you find a job and enjoy being there.

Hi cindy,
Thanks for the tips, though I have never been the type of person to talk negative about anything. There will always be pros and cons no matter where you are, work or live . So the positivies will be commented and the negatives....well.... I do as I always did, make the best out of it

As a matter a fact, you could say that I am trilingual Fluent in English, German and Swedish both written and word. I truly do hope I will be able to find a job, because sitting at home all day long just isn't for me. I will do my best in finding one.

Hi Belle,
Thanks for the information, yes so I heard about the DOD. Another question for you though. Does the military have their own schools, kindergarten and daycares on post in USA as they did in Germany?? I would assume not. Cause I really could see myself working in a daycare or work as a daycaremom since I worked with this Back in Sweden.
Tina
PS; Iwill most definetly let you know what Ft.Hood is like soon as I explored it.

I have a friend who lives there (her husband is military) and it took her about five minutes to get a really good job through the base. Use the services on the base and let them help you. I don't think you'll have a problem. Also don't forget, people move in and OUT of there all of the time so there will be plenty of people leaving their jobs as you arriving. Welcome to Texas!!

The schools on post at Fort Hood are part of Killeen Independent School System & not part of DoD.
KISD is usually always hiring due to the reality of PCSs, deployments, etc. There is also Temple ISD & Belton ISD. Those two do not get the same turnaround.
All three websites for the schools have an area to see if there are job openings & many times they are looking for aids if you are not certified.
[I am a middle school teacher & taught in Killeen]
There are a TON of daycares in Killeen. One of the better ones to work for is the Log Cabin Learning Academy. The daycares in the area do not pay all that well, though & it is a lot of work!
There is also a very large daycare system on post. The only concern I have with daycare on post is that the kids have to wear name tags b/c there are so many of them.
The easiest thing would probably be to work on post b/c you'd also get most post holidays off The commissaries, the PX, the banks [again, always hiring], etc. Remember, Fort Hood is home to 60,000+ soldiers and their families. There are ample employment choices both on & off post.
I'd steer way of anything that has to do w/ "downtown" Killeen or areas directly off of post. They are just not safe.
Best of luck. Remember sunglasses!
