It is the hometown of that total hunk Matthew McConaughey.

I've only been to Uvalde for the day during our trip down to the Frio River a few years back. Seemed like a fairly nice size city but out in the middle of nowhere. They still have one of the old pharmacies w/ the lunch counter. I love old houses and the architecture and did notice several that were lovely. Your pretty close to the Frio River area if you want to go tubing or kayaking for a day. If you like to campout you are also very close to all of the areas to camp around the Frio for a weekend. It would be a place that has alot of outdoor activities failry close by if you are into the outdoorsy stuff (hiking, kayaking, cycling, etc). As for jobs and the housing market and actually living there I don't have a clue.

Of all the places I have seen you list,Uvalde is by far the best one (working from memory and without rereading our posts).Uvalde is beautiful, and the area just north around Leakey and Vanderpool is even more beautiful. It's only 1 to 1 1/2 hrs from San Antonio.

Default Uvalde Info

Uvalde is a nice small city. You're also about an hour from Del Rio and the Mexican border. Garner State Park is nearby (along with the rest of the Hill Country (nice!).

Here are a couple of web pages on Uvalde.

I live in Wisconsin with my 3 kids and Hubby! My Husband is originally from Uvalde so every year we get to visit for about 3 weeks. I LOVE Uvalde and I am currently trying to move there. The reason I think it is great is because of it's small town charm. I love the old pharmacy with the original soda shop. I love the fact that you are only about an hour from San Antonio and about the same from the boarder. I love the rivers! I even love HEB! LOL! It's also not to far from Hill Country Which is breathtaking! Now the downfalls I feel in Uvalde is the rate of gang crime...I come from a town that has a MUCH higher rate of gang crime but it is also much bigger than Uvalde. The other downfall is that there is no MALL!!! I am not much of a mall shopper but it would be nice to have one in Uvalde. And lastly ( this is why I haven't been able to move there yet ) The amount of GOOD paying jobs are few unless you are a nurse! Oh I almost forgot....I am not to fond of the Hospital...almost everytime I visit Uvalde one of my kids either end up sick or hurt ( as kids often do ) and I usually make one to 2 trips to the Uvalde hospital, I have to say unless they have changed things there they are SSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW......I have never been in a hospital that was so slow.....So hopefully they will work on that but if you are not in a life threatning situation you can always drive an hour away to San Antonio! I actually decided to do that one year and it was a good experience concidering the circumstances! But all in all I Still LOVE Uvalde! Every town has it's flaws but it just gives it more charm!! Thanks for reading!

Default How About Hondo or Castroville?

You might look into Hondo or Castroville. They are small towns and you're closer to San Antonio (hospitals, malls, etc.). Also, the Hill Country is due north from these two towns.

Love Hondo. Well, I love the sign on the road coming into Hondo.
They also have a fairly nice HEB grocery store. With trees in the parking lot..... And not trees that are little twigs that were put in by the developer. But the sign is a winner in my book. I'd live in Hondo just for that.

Default Reply to Hondo sign

I have always loved that sign in Hondo! when I drove through there the first time I went to Uvalde I laughed my butt off and I made my husband turn around so I could see it again....I guess we were going to fast.... LOL....Anyways Hondo is a little small for me. But it is close enough to Uvalde. Does anyone know the crime rate or gang rate there?

Castroville is a beautiful City!!! I have always thought it was. I don't know much about it though. I really want to be close to the rivers for my kids to go swimming.
