-Sheriffs, school board members and other officials are constantly being arrested for their involvement in the drug trade, money laundering and other criminal acts (No need to prove that one, you know it's true)
-Your car insurance rates will go up about 25 percent if you move from almost anywhere in the United States to the Valley (State Farm)
-Prostitution and drugs run rampant (everybody knows this already)
-It is about the least ethnically diverse place in the country (Forbes)

And why are you writing us from Lubbock? The Valley wasn't good enough for you? Or was it UTPA? And if you tell me you moved for a job, well add that to my list also. There are very few good jobs down there.
-Many cities in Texas have 50% dropout rates and many more in the other states.

-San Antonio was the second worst big city in the country concerning teen pregnancy.

-San Antonio has some of the worst drivers in the country way worst then the valley's drivers in my opinion.

-Most of those drugs from Mexico usually end up here in San Antonio and you can see prostitution in any time of the day in the inner city(it is so obvious and so wrong man but it's life for some women).

We have the same problems and worst but San Antonio is continually named the best place to move to.

Umm...yeah. The City of Houston has poor planning and along with its decision not to use zoning. Roads with 12 lanes and what have you. Ha!

I believe the roads are due to something called....growth? And poor planning? There is no planning in the Valley. At least when we ask for an interstate, we don't delude ourselves with signs that say "future I-69 corridor" for 12 years.

Are you a transportation planner or employed for TxDOT? Then you do not know. Planning is in the Valley. Better planned than the "hell" of a Houston that exists. Yeah, future I-69 corridor for 12 years because of all the environmental assessments, impacts, costs, and decision between either highway 77 or 281. Plus, the costs and trouble of acquiring the land to go forward with construction.

Just recently, it has been decided that Highway 281 will be the new Interstate 69.
BTW, the proposed interstate 69 will connect and is an extension to Indiana's I-69. So you can tell the entire state of Texas (all the cities and towns) that they delude themselves with signs. Oh, and the states between here and Indiana. Thanks!

I had a pleasent trip to the McAllen area. First, I have to dispell a few myths. 1) There are plenty of opportunities (jobs) in South Texas. There is a huge demand for teachers in South Texas. 2) education in el Valle is not that bad. Weslaco has an excellent school district. They have been recognized 10 of the past 12 years. Traffic was not that bad in the areas that we traveled through. I think that we will probably buy in Weslaco because of the great school district. The proximity to Monterrey MX is nice and crossing the border is easier there than at Laredo.

I have lived in Mcallen for 28 years. I moved here in '69 (8th grade), lived here until '94, moved to Denver for 10 years, then moved back in '03.
Certainly, there are lots of Hispanics here...BEAUSE MEXICO IS 7 MILES AWAY!
Traffic problems? Please tell me a city where there are no traffic problems. Expressway 83 will get clogged at the 281 interchange around 5 in the evening and around 7:30 in the morning. IT'S RUSH HOUR FOOL! I lived in Denver...you wanna talk about traffic jams?
Education? My wife is a school teacher and has been for 28 years: mostly here in McAllen. A more dedicated and caring teacher you will not find. All the school districts have their problems. Gangs are definitely a problem everywhere; not just here.
Crime? Find a city that doesn't have crime. Stolen cars? yep, across to Mexico.
I do not speak fluent Spanish, but I get along fine. The Hispanics are just people...treat them with respect and you will receive the same. No one looks down on you because you are "blonde". How ridiculous is that? Blonde people are not "targets".
Some of these clowns who post in this forum do not live in McAllen, and should not be flapping their jaws about all the bad.
Shopping? who cares? my parents have been driving to San Antonio for almost 40 years to go "shopping". They don't care. What do you need? There is Sachs 5th Avenue, Dillards, a huge outlet mall about a year old now in Mercedes (20 miles).
Concerts? I really don't keep track who comes and who doesn't but you could look at the Dodge Arena website and find out. I KNOW there are world renown bands that perform there in Hidalgo.
Yes, the summers are brutal. There is a thing called air conditioning, you know.
The winters are very mild...85 yesterday and 65 today. Rarely a hard freeze.
The winter texans do not flock here like they used to in the '70s. There are quite a few, but that generation has passed on.
Your children can get a good education here. There are universities and colleges minutes away.
The cost of living is cheaper here as well.
Good luck and Welcome!
