Default Tyler Area Or San Antonio Area and Why?

Ok, we are wanting to move to Texas, however, we are going back and forth between the Tyler area and the San Antonio area.
We are wanting like an acre or two with a decent home, with the option of having a horse or other farm animals, and GOOD schools!
I have noticed that the Tyler area seems a bit cheaper for homes than the SA area. When I say SA area, we are looking a suburbs (Helotes, Boerne New Braunfels etc). We have friends that are moving to SA, that is why we started looking in the area.

Could you all give me YOUR two cents on where you would choose and WHY?

Weather as far as humidity and temps (I live in the Arizona desert, anything you have there is cooler than this , but as far as humidity, which is better or worse?), critters (scorpions, ticks, snakes etc), I know they are a given in Texas just as they are here (except for ticks) but just curious, and any other info you might give that would help in being a deciding factor.

Thanks in advance!

I don't live in either place, but have been to both.

I think I'd choose the San Antonio area because they have fewer tornadoes there. I like the Hill Country area better than East Texas. I'm not too fond of the ethnicity percentages in either place, but if I had to choose, I'd choose San Antonio. Of course, I wouldn't want to live in SA or Tyler either for that matter. As you mentioned though, near the towns would suit me better as well.

San Antonio has many more people than Tyler, but the crime rate is about the same.

Truly, I think the humidity would be pretty comparable in both places in spite of what is said about East Texas and its humidness.

Bugs, snakes, and Texas just go together. They'll be everywhere.

I doubt that will help you much as it's just what I believe I'd do if I had a choice of either place.

I don't know anything about the school systems.

Well, I have known folks to move to Dallas from East Texas and have zero desire to ever return citing no jobs, hick country schools, loads of poor people on meth.

I have also known folks to move to Dallas from San Antonio and they all, without fail, miss it and wish they could return and if possible, they do return.

I grew up in Dallas, have family in the Tyler area so was always over there. parents were divorced and dad lived in San Antonio. Loved East Texas because of all the tall trees and the people, while having to get used to there ways are very very friendly. Love San Antoino have a ranch outside Boerne, countryside more rugged terrain, there are feral Hogs a plenty out there, little other critters and a few big cats that call the area home. Loads more stuff to do in San Antonio and the region it seems to me (or within a short drive). Course right now I just moved to Austin and we will see how I like this place.
