Planning to move to Luling
My wife and I are planning to move to Luling within the next 6 months. We are excited and cannot wait.
We presently live in Las Vegas, she is a retired Nurse and I did 38years with two different Police Departments, retired from both. Anyone that can give us info on Luling other than the Patriot Settlement (that is where we are moving to) would be appreciated. We are non-denominational and very active in our Church in Las Vegas. Thanks much.

You just missed the annual Watermelon Thump this past weekend and watermelon seed spitting contest. I just LOVE watermelon season.

I agree, good BBQ. Small town feel, nice little downtown area. You'll get used to the smell that arises in some parts of town - sulphur smell from some of oil wells. They do have some unique decorations:

If the smell of sulphur (from oil wells) doesn't bother you, then Luling would be fine.

hope you have a different water system than the town or that has improved over past 20+ years--gas well smell is still there but not as bad--think that town is really an eye sore--just not a lot of money going into it for any type of sprucing up...
my husband grew up there in the 50s and we visited his parents there for several years after we were married in the 70s---after his father died, his mother moved to victoria to be with her daughter and other family....
Luling City Market has the BEST BBQ of any place in the state--and that is saying something---but there is NO shopping in Luling--even the grocery stores have not been updated in years---we go back for the Thump periodically and to eat BBQ when we are in the area....and when you compare the progress that towns like San Marcos, New Braunfels, Seguin have made and compare to Luling---there is no comparison---to be fair it is not a county seat and does not have any business there but for the City Market BBQ that people come specifically for--not like Gonzales that has some really nice antique stores and some bed and breakfast to take advantage of the historical sites in area...
Most people do their shopping in Seguin or San Marcos...very downscale city sq--not much happens there except for the Thump--maybe that will appeal to you -- it is certainly not a happening place...
we have seen info about that development and kind of laughted that people would see Luling as a desireable place to live or be retiring to when ost people were just trying to get out--the police chief is one of his best friends from high school--he retired from Austin police as a detective sgt and moved home and now is about to retire from this second police job....
no real hospital around there that I know of--Gonzales or Seguin probably close ones to go to....
too many old memories would make that attractive to us...

To the Senior Citizen who says there is not hospital in Luling - the Seton Edgar B. Davis Hospital is according to several agencies that rate hospitals one of the best in the Seton system. We now also have the Warm Springs Rehab hospital that was in years past in the small town of Ottine. This is one of the finest re-hab hospitals in the State. As to nothing going on but the Thump - perhaps they just are not hear at the right time - The Zedler Mill Foundation has over the past 6 years obtained grants to build a beautiful pavillion and also shore up parts of the old mill that are still standing - we have the first paddling trail on the San Marcos River - We still have "Night in Old Luling" - one of the few small towns that still have the one night festival left over from the Bi-Centenial - we are a "Main Street" town - not a small feat for this town - our Luling Area Oil Museum has grown - hopefully "senior" has visited it when they were in town for the Thump. The Museum holds a juried art show once a year ' usually in September that draws artists from around the state. We have a Casi approved chili cook off in April that just this past cook-off had over 100 entries and in the car show that is held on the same day there were also over 100 entries. On the same day as night in old Luling there is also a large quilt show. During the Christmas holidays the downtown area merchants have an event called Chocolate & Carols - the merchants vie for the best hot chocolate-cookies, etc.
Yes we are not Seguin - they after all have TLU or San Marcos with Texas State University - nor are we Gonzales with the beautiful old homes - we are however a town with a vision for our future and the future of our children and are working very hard on keeping our small town values. Hopefully you will re-visit again soon -or call the local Chamber for a list of times and dates.
