Portales, nm to Amarillo, TX
Any advice out there for a move from Portales, nm to Amarillo? I will be looking for a job in the road constructioin field. May be looking in the canyon area. Advice on the schools would be helpful as i have 5 boys. 6th grad to 1st. Are there any houses to rent? Job market or crime? thanx.

Canyon has great schools. There are plenty of houses to rent in both the Canyon area and Amarillo area. Being in Texas, there will be no short of road construction. Canyon is more of a college type town. It has the university there. But also a great place to raise a family. There are several parts of Amarillo that are great as well. I personally would stay on the southwest side. It is newer and nicer. There are nice parts all over Amarillo though, don't get me wrong. I haven't lived there for a few years, but my best friend still lives in Canyon. Someone who lives there now may be able to help you out more with the specifics of Amarillo as far as crime wise.

The oether poster covered it well but I can add that Canyon being a UNIV town, there are quite a few rentals. Now, they are pricey as it is a college town. If you want public schools, stick to Canyon school district if you possibly can - that from most of my buds who are long-time Amarillo schoolteachers. We also have some very good private Christian school choices. Welcome!

victoriana,
We're also looking at Amarillo - one of my children would be in a program with MHMR that requires her to attend Amarillo schools. As far as I can tell Canyon doesn't have an alternative program. Any thoughts on districts or HighSchools that have good special ed programs? We'll be moving in the next month or two, hopefully before school starts - the downside is you can't visit the programs in summer.

Stay away from NE Amarillo---you will know it when you drive by it. The hospital area on the NW side of town is being built up, as is the SW (lots of subdivisions). Older and nicer homes near the Amarillo College area (one of the best junior colleges around) and the Wolfin area on the west side of Washington, but rarely are these houses for sale. Most of your apartment complexes will be on the southern side of town. I lived in Ama 11 years before moving to the Pac NW. Canyon is great. Still has a small town feel to it. Schools are good and they just built a brand new high school. Canyon is a great place to raise a family and they now have decent grocery shopping. If there is something you can't get in Canyon, it's only about a 15 minute drive on I27 north to Amarillo.
