Does anyone want to live in the country outside Austin and San Antonio? Beautiful views, convenient and so quiet! Our children are grown and now it is time for a smaller place even further away from the city. (We presently live 20 miles from Austin and about 35 from S.A. in a little town called Niederwald, in an 1880 Victorian renovated home on 15 acres in the middle of 165 acres with lakeview and on top of a hill. We have all the modern shopping conviences to the city (12-20 minutes) yet piece of mind from the hustle bustle. I thought we would never move from our homegrown, organic farm but we are moving to west texas hill country asap to build our little log cabin in the woods. Once we made the decision to do it, we called our favorite relators! So much land and so much cheaper than what I am hearing from others. Our property taxes for our Ag exempt and our homestead are 1160.00 a year. I feel for anyone that has to work so many hours and miss out on such important issues as "Family Time" especially after us losing a child to a drunk driver in N.E. Texas! Family is what it is about! Anyone feel the same way?? We have been in the "Live to work instead of Work to Live" scenerio in our lives before. The world seems backwards at times, but it is our choices that can turn it all around at least on a personal level which will eventually lead to a larger level. Just my opinion!

I don't complain about that. Every state is different. I have to admit though, I have been bummed because the "fish aren't fresh" here, and I do miss mountains. I draw the line at the Napa wine comment though.....it "has to be" a Sonoma County wine!!!

Are the builders Texas based construction companies? I would assume they'd have to be....maybe you should picket them??

I am a native Texan and go back and forth from SoCal to Austin and Most native locals in Austin (when I say this I mean people that are 6, 7, 8th generation Austinites like myself) do not want any one to come into the state especially people from LA. I think it is becaues when people in Texas, natives, think of LA they thing of anorexia, cocaine, and superficial rich people which in not entirely (notice I say entirely) the case. I am not saying that all natives of Austin, or Texas do but in my experience most do.

Yes, and most Texans get this jaded view of Californians without having ever set foot in the state. Don't you people know the difference between Hollywood fiction/hype and the real world?

Sounds just like Cheryl from Curb Your Enthusiasm with veeeeeeeeeeeery elooooooooooongated voooooooooooowels. Californians do have an accent; everybody has an accent. It's not meant to be offensive.

I lived in the UK for years where fish was VERY fresh, and I haven't had a bad piece of fish since I've been back in Texas. I guess you just have to know where to go to get it.
Not being a wine drinker, I'm amused yet bored by wine debates. All of a sudden, everyone's a damn sommelier.

"You people"?
I've been to California many times for business and pleasure, and I do not nor have I ever held that particular stereotype. I formed my opinions about Californians both by dealing with them here in Texas and in their native environment.
Most people in CA, and I do mean MOST people, are fine...if not a little eccentric. They appear eccentric to me, anyway. It's just a few of "you people" who ruin everyone's reputation.

Sounds like a "valley girl." Those accents crack me up. They're not even a natural accent, they're something people deliberately do, to try and sound cool.
