Funny, the things I have never heard about a California accent is it being "clipped," "whiney" or "nasal." Is this how the folks on the nightly news speak or voice overs on commercials? I was always told that people going to California to break into the entertainment biz had to learn to speak like Californians more than any other regional accent as Californians had the least accent and therefore seemed desirable by media standards. All those voice coaches taught folks to drop their New York accents and Southern accents. Am I wrong here?

Thanks for the clarification on that. "I was so self absorbed that the obvious appeared to be quite subtle," she replied in her whiney, nasal and clipped voice. In fact, if you look at that Wikipedia entry, part of us in northern California seemed to have that more midwestern sound of General American in recent times.

Well, I wasn't calling you out personally so I'm sorry if it came across this way. CA will always have a special place in my mind, and one of these days I hope to live there for awhile. But I can't help but notice there are many people in here from CA who DENY their accents. It's subtle to you, but it's definitely noticable to a Houstonian who has travelled a bit.
It IS amazing how so many people there notice the subtle blemishes on their bodies, faces, etc... and go to such great lengths and expenses to remove them but to acknowledge the subtle accents? No way! Seriously, what is so bad about it anyway?

As I posted earlier, I was long aware of Californians having an accent. When I first traveled outside the U.S. about a hundred years ago, it was brought to my attention by many people in the world who couldn't exactly place it but guessed Australian. I really liked finding out I had an accent. It made me feel special.
To many of us in California, we sound like a great number of people on television, correctly or incorrectly, so we somehow believe we are accentless. In general, our regional differences I think are downplayed somewhat. I mean we really didn't have our food labeled California cuisine until the last decade or two at most. That certainly includes accents. I agree that many of us were and are overly conscious of very subtle and not so subtle blemishes. That is kind of a regional thing too especially in So Cal where our lives really do revolve around the media industry. I don't think people there really get that until they leave it behind for other climes. Many of my relatives and friends were and are employed in that industry. In every other state they would be electricians and not key grips or delivery people and not best boys. How many personal assistants or body guards do you know? So, that world really does impact our perception of the rest of the world. If you spend all day on movie sets with beautiful looking, perfectly outfitted people, you soon begin to think that is the world. It isn't. Ones minor flaws become more significant when you are looking at Salma Hayak all day long. That whole thing then seeps into our existance in many ways. Check out the O.C. thread for California and read how they describe the women of Orange County. That will give you a clue....

LOL Oh please.....trust me, accents aren't among the conversations most people even discuss.......how silly. What are you, about 27??
And those "many" people in here would be who? Who ever denied it, besides me commenting I didn't consider us to have one?
Can you be just a tad more rude in your posts, can you exagerate just a lil more? Put your boxers on backwards the past few days?
You're the one going off about it, being rude and condescending.
Chill out......good grief.

Bu I want to say I spent time in Texas lately and love it.I talked to a few Texans which are nice people and a few of them told me they are not too happy with Californians moving there, specially Austin. It has driven up values to where some Austin natives can't afford it anymore.
Further more politically wise I would like to remind Californians that moving to Texas they should consider themselves Texans and not Californians in Texas.I think much of the political mumbo jumbo that Californians supported in California could turn Texas into another California. The same could be said about my home state Florida.
So respectfully agreeing with some Texans I spoke with, that government regulation, taxes and firearm legislation is not wanted by most Texans.Or it will turn into another California.
