I would do a search for "South Padre Island condos" rather than hotels. The hotels don't seem to be that great down there.

We stayed at the Radisson two years ago and were very happy with it. Don't expect Four Seasons, but the room was clean and well stocked. We stayed in a "condo", which was really a large hotel room with a kitchen. It was great because we could eat cereal and sandwiches when we wanted instead of eating out every meal. The view of the Gulf was fantastic. I would stay there again.

I have booked for August this hotel: SUPER 8 MOTEL 4205 Padre Boulevard - 8597

I have read many positive reviews (for example from tripadvisor Super 8 South Padre Island, South Padre Island - Reviews & Deals - TripAdvisor )

It's kind of a beach town trend for the hotel/motels to be horrible. I stayed in Daytona Beach Florida and the hotels on the strip nearly all seemed like they were about to fall down.

I understand why though. It's got to be tough to maintain them because they are by nature subjected to the elements of wind, water, and salt errosion and corrosion. People track sand and water into them all the time so the floors of the rooms are always subjected to moisture (mildue). And at the same time they are very profitable because people pay big bucks for ocean front rooms and the owners don't feel the need to make major improvements if they rake in the money whether the accomodations are good or not.

Default Fooey on S. Padre-go to Port Aransas

Hey-I work in Port Aransas and it's really cool-much less commercial than S. Padre and the beaches are clean and there are many interesting places to stay and I could go on forever!
