Default Looking for musical, old-fahioned place to live in TX

Howdy all. I am currently considering moving to Texas. I am aware of how huge Texas is and am not sure where to live based on my criteria and don't have the money to travel around. My criteria is pretty simple: (1) I am a musician by trade (Mostly Traditional Country Music and some Blues) and want to live in an area that is highly musical with a plethora of band opportunities and Honky-Tonks, venues etc.

(2) I am also a country, conservative and an old fashioned guy I really need a laid-back, down-home, old-fashioned, and traditional Texas type of environment. What I am looking for are suggestions on an area or areas of Texas that might suit my needs. I cannot live in huge cities like Dallas/Ft. Worth etc. But also dont want to be far from moderate city sizes.

I know Texas has a very musical climate but want to be in the best areas for my style, and for the cultural climate I need. I don't care for fast-paced, modern-city, environments. Thank you for your help and please ask any questions.

Due to this quote sounds like you need to live in Nashville.

Ok, besides that, either FW or Austin (or suburbs/outlying areas of them) will probably be your best bet if you are looking at music BUT if criteria #2 is a big deal, then FW and surrounding areas would be what you are looking for.

East Texas.......check out Moore's Store in Ben Wheeler. There's a great guide to the entire region called the County Line magazine.

Nashville? Traditional country? Not for a very long time, from what I can tell.

Most of what comes out of Nashville these days sounds like 1970s rock.

Bandera area may be a good match.

I have travelled to some of the smaller towns west of Ft. Worth. Seems like there are small bars/dance halls to play at in Mingus, Abilene, Santa Anna, etc.

The OP said he was looking for a plethora of venues and honky tonks...Nashville seems to make more sense than someplace in TX.

I agree with Nashville not being "traditional" country much anymore but FW has some places, Austin has some, east TX for some blues but for a plethora of venues...I don't know of any in TX. Anyone else have a better answer?

Plethora -- well supposedly every musician in Dallas has lived on Oram Street at one time or another - it's in the East Dallas/Lakewood area which is like a small town in the big city and there are many venues all around within about two or three miles - you really don't ever have to get on a freeway or tollway or even a very busy street.

VERY much agree with New Braunfels. It has a checkmark next to each of your criteria points.

30 min. to San Antonio & 45 min. to Austin for larger venues or opportunities....but lots of dives/ honkytonks etc. in greater NB & 15 min. up the road in San Marcos.

A couple of links that might be helpful:

I think the OP would like Tyler but I don't think it has much of a music scene.
