Question Cycling in Bourne,Kerrville, Fredericksburg

Am considering retiring in either Bourne, Kerrville or Fredericksburg. My husband and I are cyclists and was wanting to know what city would be best for cycling. I've checked out the web and have discovered Hill Country Bicycle Touring club...are there any other organized clubs or social rides in these areas? Any info on the cycling community would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I've lived in Boerne (note the spelling) and I think for pure cycling, Kerville is the best. It has less conjestion, urban-creep, and has more resturants. Housing is a little on the pricy side, but it is in Boerne too. Fredericksburg is a nice place -- but it's the kind of place a lot of people visit but don't live there.

There is a thread somewhere on here about biking in the F'burg area...there are some great areas just outside of town in almost all directions that have low traffic/low speeds and that are beautiful. My folks live out N. of F'burg and my wife goes out there as often as she can just to get some cycling in (she is a cyclist - I am not ).

Check this thread for any info on the F'burd area cycling:

Fredericksburg's population is over 10,000 while Boerne's is under 9,000. Kerrville (note the spelling) has a population of over 22,000.

I don't understand your congestion comment. To me, Kerrville is very congested which is one reason I wouldn't live there aside from the fact of high home prices. Restaurants (note the spelling) can be found in any of those towns.

I remember that thread. The Harper area was mentioned as a great cycling area. It is also in Gillespie County west of Fredericksburg.

No, she does not currently belong to an 'official' club, but she has an informal circle of friends that 'call' a ride every weekend, pretty much. She is just getting back into it after having a baby, so she is doing a little more riding on her own right now. There is a southwest austin cycling club (that might even be its' name) that is quite large, I understand, and it does schedule rides in the hill country fairly regularly. Don't know about other clubs, but they might be able to put you in contact with some. Let me go and see if I can find a link for them....

Okay, not quite what I was looking for, but maybe useful...LOTS of links.

Ahh, this is closer:

Hey guys, anyone familiar with cycletexas.com or something along those lines? They have a map that gives you an INCREDIBLE cycling route from Fredericksburg to Harper and back. The scenery is fantastic and I just did it by car yesterday and maybe saw only 1-2 cars the whole way.

There is one road that is now my favorite Hill Country Route--DOSS-CHERRY SPRING RD. and there is a lovely little church with and old-time/frontier-style house across the street with an incredible view of the hill country. I think it looks like something straight out of a fairy tale.

That is right along my wife's route, except she leaves from the Willow City area rather than F'Burg. Great ride. If you go out along Pecan Creek (I think?), you will also get to see a huge area affected by oak wilt...really quite depressing, but very eye-opening.

May one live out there in the boonies or is it too isolated for civilization? I know you said Doss was extremely rugged. A fairy tale area sounds wonderful to me. I could live in a little castle out there.

Trainwreck20 ~ That is so depressing about the oak wilt. If that ever happens to my Live Oak, I'll cry for real.
