I grew up in Edinburg (it's right next to Mcallen) and there are pros and con to living there. The crime is high but it's like that in all large cities. the more people there are, there more crime, right? The schools, imo, aren't that great.
Pros- tons of shopping, lots of stuff to do, live near South Padre Island, nice people (mostly), tons of good food,

Cons-TERRIBLE drivers (watch out for those who will try swerve in front of you so that they can get some insurance money), I don't mean to offend anyone but people (not all) love to sue down there so be careful, the school I went to wasn't all that great but I hear there are some good schools there, and it's really crowded with people.
Don't worry too much about be super blonde. People love that down there...they will touch your kids but it's all about the evil eye. If they don't touch you, they fear that that your child will get sick.
I don't know where you are coming from but watch out for head lice. It's not about being dirty..it's all about it being nice and warm now there so the little suckers are in heaven. make sure to check your kids hair everyday, tell them not to share hats, caps, hairbrushes, etc. with anybody.

With that being said, Mcallen is a decent place to live. You'll have tons to do that's for sure!
We don't live there anymore...haven't been back home for about 9 years but I've heard it's grown even more so it must be suepr huge by now.
Good Luck with your move. Dont' worry too much, you all will be just fine!

And people get mad at me when I say the Valley is slightly backwards. That's okay, next time I get sick here in Houston I'll make sure to drive to the Valley, have some Curandero wave an egg over me and throw it off the property the next morning

Rascal Flats? They'd be lucky if they could book a bar that seats 500 people in Houston.
Not true again at least for Donna Summer. She filled the Houston Symphony downtown when she came to Houston.
Coming again next season and will fill it again.

Hello, I will be moving to McAllen very soon. I am looking for an Apt to rent. Could anyone recommend a place to live? I prefer to live close to UTPA, but I was told it is not safe to live there. Is that true?
Thanks.

My friends all live near UTPA, I guess you can say it's not safe in terms of the residents all being between 18-25 and they get wild (party wild) on the weekends. Try some apartments off of Nolana and N. 10th Street near the HEB and Whataburger. It's close to Pan Am and I had a friend who lived in that area. Nice and quiet.
